Alba, April 7. Weather continues tomewhat squally, making plowing and spring backward Stock of all kinds has come through the winter In good condition and without any loss and are now mostly in pasture and range stock will be turned on the Bid way division of the Blue moun tain reserve from April 15 to Octo ber 31. Messrs. Sullen and Wright, forest rangers, are busy running and blai lng the lines of the new addition to the Blue mountain reserve, also the dividing line between the cattle and heep ranges. A force of men will commence on the trail as soon as weather will per mit, where they left off last fall, running from the head of Hldaway creek south Into the John Day coun try. The forest officials have bought Tom Wlllaby's place between Hlda way and Lehman springs and will build quarters for their employes there this summer and telephone con nections will be made all over the reserve. - The Alba sawmill with a full crew has commenced operations and ia making about 15.000 feet per day of lumber needed in the market. They will have teams hauling to Pilot Rock as soon tl the lumber is dry. Arbogast brothers of Ritter, fed 54 head of beef steers at H. T. Connell'a last night. They are on their way to Pendleton. The cattle are a fine lot and are consigned to the Seattle market. William Futter has purchased a fine band of horses in the Xorth Powder country and will go Into horse raising extensively Sam Clark of Weston Is visiting with friends here. Owing to Inconvenience and cost of changing butter boxes from the stage office at the Rock to the train. Ike Reeves will run a butter wagon from here to Pendleton during the summer in order to accommodate the dairy men in getting their butter to the market as speedily as possible with out changing during the hot weath er. Rev. Levi Johnson of Pendleton, preached here and organized a Sun day school last Sunday. $100 Reward. $100. Athena, April 7. Hon. H. M. Cake is speaking at the 'Athena opera house this afternoon to a large num ber ot people from the surrounding country, many being here from Wes ton. Politics Is the main topic of conversation these days, and it prom ises to be thus until after election. Want the Line. The people of this place are much interested in the matter of the exten sion of the Walla Walla Traction company's electric line from Milton to thi? place, and on to Pendleton, the county seat. -It Is understood that the company is figuring on asking for a franchise through this place before long, and as they have already made application to appear before the coun cil at Weston at an early date. It Is more than probable that they will be surveying on this way soon. . R. J. Boddy has returned from Wal la Walla, where he had been in the hospital for some days for medical treatment. The farmers of this section would like some warmer weather for the growing wheat crop. The nights are a little too cool. The wheat looks fine thus far, however, and It la thought that there will be a bumper crop unless something unforseen hap pens. The Caledonian picnic which will be held In Athena the latter part of May this year promises to be the event of the kind ever given here. The committees now have the ar rangements well under way. Theodore Danner the photograph er at this place, has purchased a five acre tract of land near Baker City. It Is irrigated land. Rev. Ellis has gone to Baker city to remain a short time. A number of our people have been county seat visitors In the last week TO VOTE ON LOCAL OPTION. Lane County Thlrstles Want "Dry" County Made Wet Again. Today the petition for the local op tion election was filed and the ques tion of whether or not the sale of li ouor shall be prohibited in Lane county will be placed on the ballots ac the coming June election. The pe tition contains the names of 591 legal voters of the county, the clerk having gone over the list and struck out all of the names which do not appear on the registration books, says the Eu gene guard. There were not many of them. The law requires 10 per cent of the voters of the county to sign the petition, and many more than the required num ber were on. The petition was circu lated during the past two months by those opposed to the present "dry" condition of the county, and many have hopes that they will win out at the polls. In a game of base ball played Saturday afternoon be Ewen the Milton cubs and the team of the La Salle institute of Walla Walla, Milton won by a Bcore of 8 to 0. The game wa hotly contested. The town is quite lively during the trial of the big water suit There are over a hundred people from the sur rounding country brought In to give testimony in the case each day The fruitgrowers have been very busy of late spraying their fruit trees. In a game of baseball played on Um local diamond Saturday afternoon bet wen the Freewater nine and the Green Park baaeball nine of Walla Walla, the latter team won by a score of 11 to 3. Ilnjre Shipment of 100,000 Grape Roots to Plant 180 Acres of Vine yards. jf, R, Sherman, who has been the chief" ni6ver In the establish ment of the "Tokay habit" In this section, has demonstrated his faith In the grape industry by ordering a huge shipment of 100.000 grape roots enough to plant ISO acres of vineyards says the Pacific Outlook. This ship ment arrived last week and this week squad of 30 or 40 men, and a dozen teams are at work planting them on the Sherman tract east of town. There Is about 300 acres In the tract, which lies upon the southwest ern slope of the red granite hills, ad Joining the townsite, and a section of 120 acres of this will be put out to grapes this spring. Of this area, Mr. Sherman expects to reserve about 20 acres for his own use, while the bal ance will be cut up Into 10 or 20-acre tracts and sold to people who want to start Into grape culture on a moj erate scale. OPERA HOUSE BLOCK. Quail Increasing in Grant. The past few summers a flock of California quail have been seen at va rious times In the hills of Granite creek, says the Granite Gem. They were seen sometime after snow fell In the early winter, then disappeared un til a few days ago, when they first put In an appearance The question is, where they spent the winter, or, for that matter, where they came from In the first place, as they are not natives of these mountains It Is hoped they will Increase till they become numer ous enough to be one of our game birds. As there seems to be no dispo sition to hunt them. It Is thought the only difficulty will be the hard win ters. Will Keep Club Open. Mr. Ormond, who is In charge of the club rooms, states today that the Commercial club will be open to members for at least 60 days longer, says the La Grande Observer. It will be at least that long before the Elks take over the building. On account of the Illness of Mr. Ormond, the March collections were not made, but club members may expect to see him bright and early Monday morning, when he hopes that all members will be ready with the required amounts.
