Wore Not Surveyors,
It was stated In an Item In the East
Oregonlan yesterday that It was "rail
road surveyors" who attempted to run
down Chief of Police Gurdane on
Sunday afternoon. It should read
"railroad graders" as It was a party
of drunken graders from the Pilot
Rock branch who did the reckless
driving and attempted to run down the
chief of police.
Work rttvinji on Residence.
Work was begun this morning on a
new six-room residence to be built on
South Main street near the residence
of Clarence Penland, by Dr. G. S. Hols,
lngton. The residence will be two
stories and contract for the cractlon
of the superstructure will be let In a
short time. The grading for the foun
dation was begun this morning.

In Chicago It Again Goes Above the
Dollar Mark.
Since the recent flurry In the price
of wheat In Chicago, the local market
has ben on the upward trend. There
Is practically no wheat being offered
to the shippers, but what little there
Is, Is bringing from 70 to 75 cents per
bushel.
In speaking of the wheat market
today, E. W. McComas, one of the
prominent buyers, said: "The price
which Is prevailing here Is higher
than the eastern price warrants. The
price offered In Tacoma Is about 82
cents, while the price In Chicago Is
now only about 10 cents higher. The
rule Is that there should be a differ
ence of 30 cents between the two
points."

lan last evening, arrangements were
made yesterday afternoon to secure
the services of Miss Kathleen Lawler,
the noted soprano of White Temple,
of Portland, to sing each afternoon
and evening nt the Eagles' carnival,
which will be held In this city next
week beginning on Wednesday, May
29, and lasting until Saturday night,
June 1.
Miss Lawler Is a friend of Mrs.
John Nlssen and will be the guest of
Mrs. Nlssen while In the city. She Is
one of the most copablo vocalists In
the northwest, enjoys a wide popular
ity nnd will be a real musical treat
to Pendleton.
She will sing each afternoon and
evening of the four days of tho carnival.

What Is Believed to bo the highest
sheep shearing record made In Uma
tilla county this year was made last
week by T. O. Goodman at the J. E.
Smith ranch when Mr. Goodman
sheared 230 sheep In eight hours. His
record for four hours was 110 head
and his average for 19 days was IBB
head per day of eight hours.
