The Prosser Record published a rsrlfw of railroad operation! In east rn Washington from which we se lect the following, which la of local Interest: The North Bank railway, or the Portland and Seattle, la nearly com pleted. This line la described by ex pert railroad men as having the beet readber in the country with the eas iest grades, Wren A Oreenough, contractors, are finishing their con tract, which Include the first If tnlles of road from Kennewlck west, and as fast as their gangs of men get through they are sent over to the Snake river road. They still bare about 400 men employed on the work. Wren A Oreenough have had one of the hardest con tracts on the en tire line. There Is a tunnel 710 feet long opposite Umatilla, which had to be drilled out of the solid rock, and a rock cut known as "Mickey Burg," at, four miles below Hover. Is about three-quarters of a mile long. From this about 16,000 square yards of rock were taken. The cut was com pleted about the first of April. There Is still another cut, IJ miles to the west, about completed, from Which 30,000 yards of rook were ex cavated. Double tracks have been laid for 18 miles down the valley from Kennewlck, and the slnglo track al ready built extends down to Camp Myers, division headquarters, . about seven miles below Hover. In order to lay rails to the grade already completed "shoo-fly" tracks were laid around the rock cuts. These tracks will be taken np as soon as the rock work is finished and tbe permanent track will then be laid. Tbe road is completed for a hundred miles below the long tun nel and only awaits the lowing of steel. Tbe bulk of the work yet un finished Is at The Dalles. It wll ltake until fall for that to be finished, and by that time the read below The Dalles will be ready for hurlness. The line above The Dalles will be In operation this sum' mer and the railway company ex pects to haul the wheat offered for shipment to The Dalles and there transfer It to boats. The Northern Pacific has com merces to double track the main line from Kennewlck to the coast Just after the road loaves Kennewlck erv heavy grades are encountered tn the Horse Heaven hills, but a new route hns been found from Kenne wlck to Prosser that will have a very ' ' light trade, and it Is on this line that work is progressing. men. Richmond, Va., May 21. The an nual reunion of the United Confeder ate Veterans will be held in this city next week. Never in the history of Richmond have such elaborate ar rangements been made for the re ception and entertainment of people from abroad as are being made for this occasion. The added attraction of the Jamestown exposition is ex pected to result in an attendance of I at least 100,000 visitors. BOISE SOLDIERS DESERT. Good Wages In the Mines Induce Men to Quit the Army. It seems there have been an unu sual number of desertions from the troops at the barracks in the past few weeks and the matter has caused some comment, says the Boise Statesman. Asked about it last evening, Captain Dudley, the commanding officer, said: "It Is true that we have lost seven men Inside of the last few weeks. As a rule, of course they are the worst characters In the troops, but I have lost one or two good men. 'I had some evidence that these men have been offered some Induce ment to desert, and. Thirty citizens of Wasco, a Sher mun county town, subscribed $60 each to secure tho services of Charles M. Hatfield the California "rain maker," who agrees to make six Inches of rain between May 26 and July 25 of this year. The money sub scribed Is payable If Hatfield secures the rainfall as per agreement during that period. The averago rainfall In that section during that period is less than an Inch, and for the entire year there is something like 10 to 12 Inches. The 11600 to be paid to the "rain maker" will be returned an hundred fold should he secure the promised rainfall. Madras Pioneer. Judgment Against the State. A brother of "Shorty" Davis brought suit against the state for the policy of his brother, which was escheated to the state upon the dis pearanca of his brother soven yean ago, and he was awarded a judg ment for the amount of the esetate in the suit which was tried in the circuit court at Prlnevllle last week..
