The chapter on the human will is alone worth the one dollar which the book costs. It gives an Inspiring short lecture on business promptitude, the art of keeping your promise. All through its chapters runs the central Idea of business Integrity, of personal responsibility, of clean-cut, fearless dealings, and a square deal for all. It is not dogmatical, it Is not ortho dux, it Is simply a business man's re ligion, teaching fair play, upright and square actions, force of character and manhood, and should find a place on the desks of every business man. Beginning with a four-days' Eagles carnival on Wednesday, May 89, there will be something doing here during the entire summer and fall. Follow ing the Eagles' carnival will come the Fourth of July celebration which the business men will make a success and within a reasonably short time after the celebration will come the district fair, which promises to be ex cellent In every way. Pendleton Invited the Umatilla county to be her guests at all of these events. She is preparing something original, entertaining and pleasant for each of the events and you will be made thrice welcome while In the city. Especially good features will be en. Joyed at the carnival next week. Noted singers, good bands of muslo, good entertainers and first-class at tractions will be found In the pro grams of the carnival and It will be a genuine mid-summer holiday. For the Fourth of July celebration many excellent features are being prepared and It promises to be up to the usual high standard of Pendleton celebrations. The people of the coun ty are cordially Invited to share Pen dleton's hospitality on that day. is over the question of the church openly indorsing the prohibition party, which stands for temperance, good morals and clean politics. Rather than surrender their alle glance to the can parties, delegates church assembly are resigning from com deal assembly. It seems rather Inconsistent that there should be any hesitancy In the matter. The church believes In tem perance, maintains a fund to promote it, supports and fosters it In every possible rhanner tnd yet when tho real test comes, many leading church delegates bolt. If the church organizations were unanimous for temperance, as they should be, and would ally themselves politically where they belong, the whiskey domination In politics would bo wiped out of existence In the twinkling of an eye The trouble Is that the partisan sen timent Is often much stronger than the religious sentiment. Men vote one people of ' way BT11 pray another and the result is that neitner tneir votes nor tneir prayers count for much In the Intrin sic moral progress of the country, ex cept to stand as compromising obsta cles in the road. The rail road Is of course of great assistance to the reclamation service in trans porting Its supplies and materials. , How the railroad Is following up government reclamation of the arid lands of the west is well shown In the line Just constructed from Hazen, -Nevada, to Fallon, making a straight line from northwest to southeast across the Truckee Irrigation project Farmers cannot depend upon the present tendencies of the wheat mar ket, as wheat, like every other mar ketable commodity, Is made the prey of the speculator. They cost all prices, from the Pittsburg stogie at three for a nickel to the two for a quarter that senators smoke, but the average that Is smoked Is the 6-cent clgnr. If all the c?gars consumed during the year were laid end to end they would reach a distance of 631,228 miles; they would circle the earth at the equator twenty-five times, and If land from Washington to San Fran cisco, they would make a pathway seventeen and one-half feet wide, and if from the White House to the Cap itol, the senators and representatives would have a boulevard of over two and a quarter miles wide to walk on when they visited the prosldent. They would completely cover the Washington monument and grounds ami there would be enough cigars left to keep Uncle Joe Cannon sup plied for the next ten years. If they were laid In a pile 100 feet square they would reach a height of five and one-third miles, and would welch 20S2 tuns. Tf they were all made by hand It would require 3,199,350 cigarmakers to make them, and all the smokers would have to smoke three cigars each day In the year to consume them. Every time the clock ticks during the 24 hours of each day there are 2401 cigars sold. To light the cigars it requires I0.H84.392 box es of matches, which are composed of 1987 tons of wood and 49 tons of svtlpiiui ar.d brimstone. If a cigar was given to each man and they stood side by side they would circle the earth 1212 times, making a ring of smoke one mile wide around tho world, and If each man was required to dig one day In the Panama cinal, It would take Just three weeks to finish It. Carruth, a university professor of Germany, has been re printed many times in the post two years. The Enst Oregonlnn has beet requested to republish it. It Is a gem and should find a place In every scrap book: A fire-mint ahd a planet, A crystal and a cell. A Jelly-fish and a sauraln, And a cave where the cave men dwell, A sence of law and beauty, And a face turned up from the clod: Some call it evolution, Others coll it God. A ha.- on the far horizon, The infinite tender sky. The ripe rich tint of the corn field, And the wild geese sailing high, And all over upland and lowland, The charm of the golden rod: Some of us call It autumn, Others call It God. Like the tide on the crescent sea beach, When the moon Is new and thin, Into our hearts great yearnings come, Welling and surging In, Come o'er the mystic ocean, Whose name no foot hath trod; Some of us call it longing, Others call It God. A sentry frozen on duty, A mother starved for her brood, Socrates drinking the hemlock, And Jesus on the rood, And millions who, humble and name less, The straight, hard pathway trod; Some call it consecration, Others call It God.
