An Import ant change In naval circles takes place this week, when Rear Admiral Wlllard H. Brownson. recently In command of the Asiatic station, as sumes his new duties as chief of the bureau of navigation. Rear Admiral Brownson succeeds Rear Admiral George A. Converse, who was retir ed for age nearly a year ago." Rear Admiral Converse asked to be re lieved )f his official duties, as It was deemed Inadvisable then to with draw Rear Admiral Brownson from the command of the Asiatic atution. Rear Admiral Brownson. the new chief of the bureau of navigation, has a high reputation In the navy for efficiency. He waa born in New York, and graduated from the naval nca.laniy In 1885; Since then he has seen all kinds of service. He has done scientific work for the coast survey, was In the hydrographlc of fice for four years, was commandant of cadets at the naval academy for fuur vcars and superintendent of that Institution from 1902 to 1900, when he was assigned to the com mand of the division of armored cruisers, and took them around to the other side of the world, where he succeeded the late Admiral Train in command of the Asiatic fleet. Few officers now in the navy have had more stirring adventures than has Rear Admiral Brownson. When he was a midshipman In the old Mo hegan,' on the Pacific station, he had a brusn witn a gang oi pirates inn was quite as exciting and sensational as an chapter In yellow fiction The Mohegan was cruising near Ma- rattan, Mexico, when the citizens of that P"rt appealed to Captain Lowe, her commander, for protection against a freebooter, who was killing innocent citizens, looting tinprotect ed towns and committing depreda tions all along the coatt. Lowe promised to look after the pirates and soon located them some where In an almost Inaccessible clus ter of lagoons. When Captain Lowe discovered the snug harbor ot the pirttes he detailed Midshipman Brownson, with a boat's crew, to hunt them down. When Brownson reach ed their refuge the pirate schooner appeared to be deserted. She look ed a? If she had been abandoned, but the , moment the Yankee sailors clambered over the side of the ves 1 were attacked by a volley from the limbs of trees and other dense vegetation along the banks. The pi rates, finding that they were pur sued, had arranged an ambush and climbed the trees, where they could command the deck of their schooner. Realizing he could not capture the -ulprits under such a disadvantage, Brownson conceived a plan that was equally effective and much safer. He ordered his men below decks to es cape the galling fire that was pour ing down upon them, aid In a few moments started a dozen, or more fires in the hold of the vessel. As soon as they were fairly ablaze he gathered up his dead and wounded, hurried them Into his boat and got away from the scene as rapidly Msslble. Before he was out of hear ing the vessel was a mass of flame! and the pirates were marooned In the swamp without ammunition or food. All their supplies and lh booty they had brought away frogi their looting expeditions were consumed with the jlilp and the local authorities were nble to captnre or kill all of them. The people of Maratlan expressed l'elr gratitude by presenting Brown- gon with n silver service bearing an .If .rvtprllte Inscription. GKN'lJRAL news. The college will plant several tracts with the seed of four varieties, and it Is believed that the new potato will produce In greater abundance In the Pacific northwest than it does In the czar's country and also excel our own potatoes. Permit the little slips of bones which frequently occur In the rough nnd tumble life of the children to wrong. Year after year the injured part Is held, back, exaggerating the difference from health. By the time adult life Is reached the Inperfectlon Is a fixed condition and permanent ill health is the consequence. Such Is tho story of the woman suf' terlng with diseases peculiar to her sex. Had the little slip been attended to properly at the time, it would hnve been but a small matter. To teach this is one of the great missions of osteopathy, to find and correct the conditions one of Its greatest wonts. When the parents have learned to care fdr the children the grown up Invalids, h whlrh the doctors thrive, will be no more, and the host of doctors must seek other lines.
