The widespread Interest in tne (flooding of the Salton sea by the Colorado river, renders the following details of that great catastrophe taken from the Boise statesman, oi more than ordinary Interest, 'lne Statesman of this morning says: At Salt Lake D. W. Ross met en gineers familiar with conditions where the Colorado river Is making a new channel for itself into the Salton sea and his narrative of conditions sur- oundlng that great bieak of the rest less river is one of the most Interest ing imaginable. The Imperial canal was tnaen out of the Colorado at a point a utuu north of the Mexican boundary for the Irrigation of lands In the great de- nroanlon of which the Salton sea is the bottom. In the course ol tune, und after a large number of settlers hud made hcmi.-a on the lands, the company found It could not keep the canal near the Inlet from filling with silt. It then got permission from Mexico to construct another Inlet from the river. This was to be done under control of Mexican engineers, but the company went ahead without waiting for advice and built a section of ca nal connecting with the main canal some distance from the river. This was not furnished with head works and when the river rose it sent a great volume of water through which at once began cutting. Before anything could be done the river had opened a great channel for Itself and was pouring Into the ballon Sinn, forming a large lake there. It fol lowed the channel some distance and then cut an Independent chanpel for Itself. This continued until practical ly the entire river was flowing through the new channel. To understand the situation It is necessary to know the elevutlors and dlMances. At Yuma the elevation Is 100 feet above sea level. As one weak link weakens a chain. so weak kidneys weaken the whole body and hasten the final breaking-down. Overwoik, strains, colds and other causes Injure the kidneys and when their activity ia lessened the whole body suffers from the excess of urlo poison circulated In the blood. Aches and pains and languor and urinary Ills come, and there Is an ever, lncrenrlnp tendency towards diabetes and fntnl Brlght's disease. There Is no real help for the sufferer except kidney help. Doan's Kidney Pills act directly on the, kidneys and cure every kidney 111. Pendleton cures are the proof. F. A. Morris, retired, who lives on Park aVenue, and Is well known to Pendleton people, says: "I . was troubled with my kidneys off and on for three years. In early days, I had worked In a shirt factory In Rock ford, III., standing all day at a bench and later on I became a motorman on an electric car. That, too, kept me on my feet nil day and aggravated my complaint. If it did not start It. It annoyed me through the dny more than at any other time. I finally got a box cf Doan's Kidney Pills at the feniieton urug lo. s store ana usea them. They cured me. I have not had even the slightest attack of back ache for five years, nor have I used any pills since I stopped the treat ment last October." For salo by all dealers. Price 50 cent. Mr. E. J. BROTHFRTON "" Proprietress, to the head of the gulf It is some 200 miles. The bottom cf Salton sink is 270 feet below sea level, and the dis tance from there to Yuma Is only about 100 miles. Flowing In that di rectlon, the water could find a drop of 370 feet In 100 miles, whereas Its natural channel had a fall of only 100 feet In twice the distance. Very Rapid Erosjon, On its new course the river gained great velocity and it consequently eroded the bottom and sides of its course very rapidly. Up to the time it was shut off by the Southern Paci fic It had, it is estimated, moved four times as much earth as Is to be mpved at Panama, and in places It had made canyons 100 feet deep. The aluvium there is of great depth, and the river will cut so lung as It has a current and a place In which to de posit the debris. It not only cut wide path for Itself, but it lowered Its channel all the way back to the old channel and up that a considerable distance. The cutting was going on at all points along the course of the stream and in the old river bed near Yuma the channel was scoured out to depth of 36 feet The Southern Pacific finally shut off the stream frem Its new channel, turning It back toward the gulf In its old course. This was done by building a dike across the stream near the in let from the old channel. This dike was a mile or so In length. Human Plans Upset. But all that work has been rendered useless. When the river rose under the Impulse of a flood from the main stream and one from the Gila also, the waters tumbled the levee on the west side of the river Into, the deep channel which had been scoured close to Us foundations. Those levees were built to keep the water off the lands at the high stage of the rlyar. When tho levee ' tumbled In the channel treacherously scoured under Its foundations, the stream struck straight across the Intervening space into the channel from which It had been turned, and the entire stream Is pouring again Into the Salton sea. It is not known whether another effort will be made to divert the stream, but the Southern Paclflo Is already preparing to move its line so It will be safo from encroachment hy the rising water In the Interior take being formed. St. John Lateran, the great basilica that faces the Campagna and the Al ban hills, In which th late pope chose to be finally burled, and which his tomb and his monument have Just been finished, is the most Important church In Rome. St. Pe ter's, on the Vatican hill, and close to the Vatican palace, Is not a ca thedral but a mere church, for the Lateran Is the cathedral of Rome the pope, being bishop of Rome, has his seat and his chapter there, and not In St. Peter's. Tie Italian gov ernment has received some praise for Its forbearance In leaving the Lateran to the popes, and, In fact, It would have been hard on them take away their cathedral from the bishops of Rome.
