Owing to the prevalence of scarlet fever In Athe na there will be no Christmas festiv ities at the churches and no public gatherings will be held. There had been extensive preparation made In the way of literary programs, Christ mas trees, etc. The mayor hns Is sued a proclamation against public gatherings, i - Will Dobson attended the Knights of Pythias convention at Walla Walla Wednesday night. The Infant son of County Treas urer O. W. Bradley was burled in Athena today. The remains arrived on the O. It. & N. passenger. Otto Keeler en me down from Ta- coma Wednesday evening, and will remain here until after the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. James Mitchell of Moro. are visiting relatives In the city and they will remain until after the rolMays. Clnrcnoe Hunker, night miller at the Prestnn-Parton mills is still con fined to his room with diphtheria, though the rase Is not believed to be a serious one. Hey Tluike, son of J. C. Burke, who lives north of the city, Is quite III with typhoid fever, though It Is not be lieved that he hns the disease In a serious form. A number of the people of Athena with small children, are leaving the town on account of the contagious diseases, expecting to remain until the scare Is over. Every precaution will be taken, however, to prevent further spread of the disease. I. M. Kemp, nsslstant cashier of the bank at this place, has gone to North Yakima, where he will visit several days. Dr. W. G. Cole of Pendleton, was in the city Wednesday on a proles' slonal visit. Mrs. Nolte, a professional nurse from the Weston hospital, has been In attendance on the Infant child of Clarence La Brache. A dxurhtor of Mr. and Mrs lost their lives. Barrett, who brought it in 16.25 per ton and all feel very grateful to him. A carload or two more of coal would serve to break the famine here. Funeral Today. The funeral of Chester J. Post, the 16-year-old son of Mrs. Wlnship. took place today from the family residence. Death was due to scarlet fever, which the boy contracted some days ago, but his death was hastened by heart trouble. tti physicians claiming that his heart was too weak' for the medi cines required. A 10-mHI school tax -was voted at the school meeting held at the school house In fills city a few weeks ago. With a 16-tnll! school tax during the past few years the district has re duced Hi bonded Indebtedness from 17000 to t0O, and Its Boating In debtedness fiom J4000 to 200. Now a 10-mlll tax will do. Stoml Hard on Stock. This section has experienced some very severe torm on the mountain sides of late, which has made H very bad for stock erasing about here in the stubble fields. Apples grown in Tasmania, Bouth of Aus'ralla, are shipped 11,000 miles to British markets and yet they pay so well that Tasmania apple orchards have sold as high as J 1000 an acre. Five hundred dollars, an acre Is a moderate valuation. The latitude of Tasmania corresponds exactly to that of Kansas, the one being In south, the other In noilh latitude. At Chicago, Robert Gordon, 15 year old, was sentenced to the re formatory for life, after pleading guilty to the charge of murdering Joeph Reed, 8 years old. Gordon pulled the Reed boy under a side walk, pounded him on the head with a brick until he was unconscious nnd then dug a hole in the earth in which he plnced young Reed and allowed him to suffocate. The water will be distributed throughout the states for baptismal use in churches. Extra ordinary precautions were taken to insure absolutely purity and cleanli ness by boiling the water before It was put In the casks on the very spot where St. John Is said to have baptized Christ. Colonel Clifford Nadaud, who head ed the expedition, encountered great difficulty In bringing the water, as there were no casks to be had in Pal-, estine, so he had t have them made in Asia Minor. Then he had to make hlscwn wagons and devise his own methods of purification In the wil derness.
