Holiday Shipments to the Portland Stockyards Are Very Heavy. Cattle shipments from the Inland empire Into Portland yards have en tirely "swamped" the market and th rush Is not yet over according to market reports from that city. The market editor of the Oregonian rays of conditions in the cattle market there, this week: Cattle shippers in the country seem to be lahomlg under the mistaken Idea that the only time to sell their stock in this market Is at Christmas. For several days they have been rush ing In their cattle In a way that has completely demoralized the market. It would not be so bad If the stock was good, but the large proportion was made up of lightweight and half fat sieers and common cows. The re sult la that f)f market Is glutted and stock that l( U fti'jiost impossible to move at any price. Jesteri'a.y's re JtjMl at lb. rd. re j ;ars of- which five were through. The other 13 completely paralyzed the market period aggregating 1 37,501. Of this sum $69,954 Is for maintenance, J21, 325 for operating expenses, $16,222 for additional equipment needed In the various departments and $S0,000 for a new building for the use of the gym nasium and training school and for Improved heating facilities. "The 17th academic year, which is Just closod. has seen an enrollment of 145 In the training school, and 324 in the normal school, making a total of 471. The attendance In the nor mal school, exclusive of the summer school, which numbered 50, has been 278. "In response to an urgent demand the policy of holding summer school was instituted last year, with an at tendance of 50. This year's summer school numbered 65. Spokesman-Review, "Tnis is the finest weather I have seen since I left here over two weMcs ago," declared Dr. C. J. Smith this morning after his return from a visit at his old home in Ohio. He was away from the city 16 days, and of those 10 were passed en route. On his return Dr. Smith came over the Northern Pacific to Spokane and says they found a continuous sheet of snow extending from Just east of St. Paul to Spokane. At one place, Far go, S. D the thermometer registered 20 degrees below xero when the trnln passed through and during most of the trip the weather was so cold that the passengers aboard the trnln were compelled to wear their overshoes and overcoats In order to keep warm. As a result Dr. Smith was in an appro priate frame of mind to appreciate Pendleton's balmy climate upon his return. v nue absent upon his short visit Senator Smith was a close observer of the Industrial conditions In the states through which he passed. He declares that the transportation prob lem is more serious In the Dakntns nd In Minnesota than In the north west. Not only Is there a fuel short age because of the railroad's failure to supply cars, but there Is also a scarcity of food In places, and the cold weather In those state makes the situation worse. As in the states farther west the complaint Is made that empty cars are left upon sidetracks, while the rail road people make excuses to shippers that they are short of rolling stock At Billings, Mont., It has been Impos sible to secure enough cars to carry the ore from the mines, and yet It Is said 500 empty cars were recently upon the sidetracks there at one time. As a result of the failure of the roads to handle the business Dr. Smith says there Is general talk all over the country of reciprocal de murrage laws similar to that now In force in Wisconsin and which Is pro posed for this state. Just a few suggestions of practical presents Something to appreciate and something to keep. NOT BAKER & SULLIVAN. Cheney Normal Wants $187,501. Through an error In this paper last evening It was stated that a mortgage foreclosure suit had been brought by Messrs. Campbell and Shubert against the firm of Baker & Sullivan. Instead of being against the latter firm the action was directed at the firm of Baker & Garrison, for mer owners of the Idle Hour saloon. Consequently, an Injustice was done Joe Sullivan, who Is now the sole proprietor of the business formerly owned by Swearlngen Bros., and has not been Involved In any financial difficulties. La Grande Convention in the Interest of Good Roods Wag Very Profita ble. With mud and slUBh Bhoe-top deep In the main streets and the mud so deep In the lanes leading Into La Grande that It was almost Impossi ble for farmers to reach town, the La Grande good roads convention was held at an opportune time to Impress upon the people the need of good roads In eastern Oregon. Dr. James Wlthycombe, director of the Oregon experiment Btatlon at Cor vallls and an enthusiastic supporter of the good roads movement, passed down the O. R. & N. on the delayed train today to his home after attend ing the convention and Is highly pleased with the results. Farmers who were In attendance In large numbers were deeply interested In road Improvement and it Is believed that the meeting will have a good ef fect In many ways. What Is known as ''Booth lane," In Grand Rnode valley Is conceded by all who are familiar with It, to be the worst piece of county road In Ore gon, was a .frequent subject of discus sion, and T. T. Geer, of this city, who addressed the convention' on the evils of bad roads, says an organized ef fort will be made next spring by the Union county court and the farmers living in the vicinity to find bottom In this famous lane and begin some ac tual Improvements. . , Refrigerator Car Service.
