NO COAL IN SIGHT.
I.cmiiI Fuel Situation No Better Than
It Will Two Weeks Ago.
The coal situation In Pendleton has
not been relieved any this week, al
though the dealers are dally expect
ing to receive shipments. Practically
no coal Is to be had at all, and people
are forced to use wood and slabwood.
The plan to have Itrltlsh Columbia
coal shipped here does not seem to
meet with enthusiasm with consum
ers, as the price will be beyond the
means of many. It is understood that
tho freight charges on coal from Al
berta will be considerably higher
than obtain for shipments from other
districts, and of course the price of
coal would be necessarily greater.
The O. R. & N. seems to be putting
forth efforts to relievo the situation,
but sec far no announcement has been
made that coal will be shipped to this
point In the Immediate future.

Here Is a little story which the Eng

go with It. When Lord Dufferlu was
viceroy of India the uiubnrajiih of In

memento nu Ivory paper cutter belong
ing to Lord Dufferlu. He consented,
the Indian left, and the viceroy never
saw him until some months later when
tho maharajah Introduced a fine young
elephant Into the room. A pile of news
papers lay at Lord Dufferin's side. The
animal went up to them, cut them
neatly with his tusks, which had been
purposely suarpeued, and laid them In
a neat heap on the floor, ready for pe

Rainfall is a condition which has
much to do with our health. A wet dis
trict with a good deal of subsoil water,
making houses damp, is a locality in
which rheumatism aud consumption
are likely to prevail. Over England
and Wales the average yearly rulufall
la about thirty-four inches. In Scotland
It reaches forty-six Inches and In Ire
land ubout thirty-eight Inches. Possi
bly the wettest parts of Britain are In
Cumberland, where the rainfall may
attain 1G0 Inches per year. One Inch ot
rain on one acre of ground means a
hundred tons of water. London Graph-
