While In the city Jail Inst night Cal lahan, the Irishmnn who has been a pest to the police for the past month or two, attempted to eat a fellow pris oner ailve. and as a result he is now belnn held for the circuit court and In all probability he will be indicted for attempted mayhem. Callahan was recently given a it'1 days sentence for vagrancy after hav ing striven In vain to prove his in nocense of the charge in the police court. Yesterday he was released from Jail but before nightfall had gotten drunk again. During the early evening he made himself a nuisance on Main street and he was once more run In by Marshal Gurdane. With Callahan In the Jail last night was a young man who had been lock ed for being drunk. This morning he told the officers that Callahan had attacked him during the night and had bit him on the neck and ear. The bov's armearance Indicated that he had been chewed by the wild Irish man. and he was sent to tell his story to the district attorney. Calahan Is being held In the city Jail awaiting the action of Mr. Phelps. and should that officer prefer charges against him he will be Indicted for a penitentiary offense. Callahan has been the source of much trouble since his arrival here and what to do with him has been problem to the police. At times he has seemed wholly Irresponsible, and the police declare that If he cannot be sent to the penitentiary he should be committed to the asylum. $10. They went on record as favoring one board of control for all the normal schools. Superintendent L. R. Alderman, of Yamhill county, was elected president and Superintendent J. T. Albert Hutchlns of Joseph, Ore., and Viola Hawke, of Pilot Rock, were among the new students last Monday, Night school opens next Monday night at 7 o'clock. There are pros pects cf a good attendance. The Salem Statesman says of the meet'ng of the school superintendents of the state which has Just closed In that city: The two days' meeting of the edu cators came to an end yesterday after noon. It was the sense of those pres ent that much good will result from the meeting even should the legislature fail to act on any of their recommen dations. Roy Belts, son of Douglas Belts of Pilot Rock, was brought to St. An thony hospital yesterday suffering from typhoid fever. While the young man's case Is hot critical he has been very 111, and It was desired to secure the benefits of the hospital for him. He was accompnnied by his wife and his father and mother, ail of whom will remain here until his condition Is Improved.
