Watch Was Taken While Family Was at Theater. On Wednesday evening the home of Leon Cohen on the north side of the river was entered by burglars while Mr. and Mrs. Leon Cohen were ab sent at the theater and a gold watch belonging to the latter was taken. From the fact that only the watch wns tnken and that the doors of the dwelling were left' open. It Is believed the robber or robbers were frighten ed away. Other Jewelry, principally dlnmonds, and of considerable value, were not taken, evidently not being found by the Intruders. So far the police have no clue to those who committed the crime. William Hilton has returned from Franklin county, Washington, where he has been engaged In contracting work during the summer. F. S. Hoffman, who has been O. R. & N. enr checker for the past year, Is now employed as switchman In the O. R. & N. yards In this city. J. W. Furnass of Hermlston, Is in the city today on a trading trip. He expects a large number of Hermlston people to nttend the fair. Miss Stella A. Regan, the missionary to Burmah, arrived last night from La Grande, and will speak at the Baptist church Sunday morning and evening. Col. H. C. Newport, the well known contractor of Echo and Hermlston, is In the city today In the Interest of his extensive contracts on the O. R. & N. E. L. Ruby of Eldora. Iowa. Is a guest of his brother, A. C. Ruby, the well known horseman, for a few days. He will leave for his home next Monday. T. W. Howell of Mahton. Wash., is I now here for the purpose of collect ing nccounts due the Gray's Harbor Lumber company, and has establish ed an office in the Taylor building. Rev. W. S. Holt, synodiral mission ary of the Presbyterian church for Oregon, passed thru last evening to Milton, where he spent today on blz ness. He will return to his home in Portland tonight. Reynold Harris, formerly manage of the Garden City Packing house of thlr city, came over from Walla Walla last evening and Is said to be h"re to settle an attachment against that defunct company. Mrs. C. II. Norrls, who has been In the city for the past month fwhlle her huzband, ( harl"s H. Norrls, Is on the Pendleton-Huntington passenger run of the O. R. & N., left this morning for La Grande on a brief vlzlt. S. N. Wilklns, prezldent of the State Association of Funeral direct ors, past thru here today on his way to his home ln Corvallls, after having attended the funeral directors' meet ing at Walla Walla yesterday. John F. Hill and George A. Hart man, sr., have Just returned from a trip thru the northern part of the county. Harvesting Is about done ln that part of the county, but there Is a large amount of grain to be hauled to the warehouses yet. Charles Wall, undertaking man for M. A. Radcr, left on the delayed No. 1 today for Irrlgon to take charge of the remains of Cole Harris, the dead engineer of the Nate B. Hover, whose body was found there today. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Mathews and daughter Amy, have Just returned from Genesee, Idaho, where they at tended the funeral of Mrs. Mathews' mother, Mrs. M. E. Daggett, who died there a few days ago. Mrs. Mathews has been at the bedside of her mother for the past two months. Notice. After making what Is virtually a confession of rob bing the bank of which he was cash ier at Ranler Ore., C. S Van Auker last night escapt from the custody o( the deputy sheriff In Portland while attempting to make restitution for the robbery of the bank. Van Auker gambled with funds of the bank it Is said, and In order to hide his shortage, he bound, gagged and shackled himself In the bank of fices on September 3, claiming thnt he was assaulted and robbed during the noon hour by two thugs. After an Investigation It wna found that he had gambled' away more money than he had drawn In salary and he was placed In custody until a further examination could be made, On leaving Portland last evening In charge of the deputy sheriff, he mnde an excuse to step Into a bildlng to pay a Mil and kept on going.
