Bi8 Mall Order Hon Has Posed as the FYlonil of the Farmer ami the Kneiny of Monopoly Hut it Is Sliown That it Is Owned by the Octopusf of Wall Street. The General Merchants' Review, a trade publication of Chicago, exposes the Peart", Roebuck and company In their duplicity. This big firm which has enjoyed a large mall order busi ness, hns claimed all along to be op posed to the trusts and monopolies, but It Is shown that It Is a part of the Wall street gang, which has systemat ically robbed the people for years. The Review says: The philanthropic methods of Pears. Roebuck & Co., have been exposed by themselves in their latest move to convert their mammoth mall order ref ill business Into a huge J40. 000.000 merchandise trust. By the action they have taken, is shown verv plainly that they have de ceived their customers for years by their false arguments about the far mer getting the advantage of their ability to buy in large quantities and thus save him money cn their pur chases. They have given themselves the lie In plainer terms than any one else possibly could have done, in their move to merge the entire business In to a giant trust. The profits that were alleged to have been turned back to the country customer, have In reality been fed into Wall streeet and now all In one lump Wall street is to reecive II. 500.000 of real hard farmer coin while Wall street gamblers are to get a hand In this rich pie and hereafter guide the course and determine the destinies of the big rural supply houe. Sears. Roebuck & Co. have boasted for vears that thev have sold at less prices than the the retailer couid buy for. and all that sort of rot, which every merchandise man and every honest retailer knew was the vilest of falsehoods. Refute Their Own Argument They have alleged that their busi ness was run in the Interests of the farmers and that they were satisfied with small profits, and that they were willing to turn all above a small margin hack Into the hands of th farmers. Now comes this giant merger. They state themselves that their business amounts to $5,000,000 a month, and that one year's profits were $3,000,000. This leaves out an added investment In buildings and equipment equal to nearly twice that sum. It Is very evident that Wall street has had an Interest In the business all along and now the whole affair Is go ing to pass Into the hands of the worst set of gamblers the world knows, and the fr rmer puts up the money. Not long ago they started a scheme to gather in the country coin on which they agreed to pay Interest at the rate of 7 per cent. At the time there was much speculation as to what this move was for. Now comes the cheering Informa tion that the new $40,000,000 trust is to Issue $10,000,000 worth of 7 per cent preferred stock, and that the firm members will retain a million of thli for themselves. FARMERS WILI, ORGANIZE. Sherman County Will Imitate VmaUIla With an Association. The farmers of Sherman county will Imitate the Umatilla county whtsatgrowers. In the formation of an association for mutual advance ment. George N. Crossfield, of Wasco, who attended the meeting In this city last Saturday, has returned home highly enthusiastic over the first steps taken by Umatilla county farmers and will urge the farmers of Sherman county to hurry up their organliatlon While In eastern Oregon Mr: Cross- field visited Union county and also went to Walla Walla and Spokane, and found that a farmers' organization similar to the Inland Empire Wheat growers' association is now in exis tence In Spokane. The Spokane Grain & Supply com pany, an association or farmers capt tallied at $1,000,000 last year saved sufficient on grain sales by organlz ing a pool, and also in the matter of freight rates and the purchase of sacks to amount to a dividend of 2 cents per bushel on each bushel of grain mar keted. This dividend was actually paid to the members of the organization last season, as profits from the organization. Sherman county produces about 2,- 000.000 bushels of wheat annually and is the second county in the state In wheat yield. Umatilla leading. The farmers of that county are anxious to have a jute plant Installed at the Or egon penitentiary for the purpose of manufacturing grain and wool sacks for Oregon. This matter will be plac ed before the nxt session of the legis lature by the representatives of the farming Interest of the state. "" A Hamas Ralasaamde. Some years ago a Spaniard named Martlnes gave one of the most extraor dinary exhibitions on record. It was t the New Tlvoll, In Paris, In the presence of an audience of scientific men, who placed Its genuineness be yond doubt A large oven had been heated by a furnace for several hours. This the Spaniard entered, clothed Id flannel trousers and shirt, a large cloak of the same material and a felt som brero. He sang a Bong while a fowl was roasted by his side and at the end of fifteen minutes came out again, tho temperature registered being between WS degrees and 312 degrees F., ot about 100 degrees above the tempera ture of boiling water. lie entered the oven a second time and ate the fowl Which bad been roasted beside htm After a short pause he was shut In, eying on a board surrounded by can dles. After awhile the audience raised a cry of "Enough!" The door wai opened. The oven was found to be full of noxious, suffocating odor of boil ing tallow, the sole survival of the candles. The Spaniard came out and after a cold bath was well and strong. His pulse when the door was first opened leot 170 to the minute. Rome itself Is spoken of as the chair or throne of St. I'eter by some enrly writers, but the actual episcopal chair which be Is believed to have occupied may still be seen In St. Peter's, a worm eaten wooden structure, preserved In a bronze covering, says the London Chronicle. It Is from such chnlrs of enisconal and other authority, of course, that we got tho phrase "ex ca thedra" nud the word "cathedral, an abbreviation of "cathedral church," the church that contains the bishop's ca thedra or chair. Some of the uses In old fashioned English of the adjective "cathedral" seem quaint now. "Cathe dral dogmatism" meant not the dog matlsm of a dean and chapter, but that of any one who spoke with an assump tion of authority. A "cathedral beara was a broad beard of a fashion an ciently worn by bishops, and In John son's time "cathedral" seems to have been slang for "antique." The American Sunday School union was established in 1824. since which time It has sveraged four new schools organized every day In the year.
