Idaho, Miners' union, and now accused of the murrier of Benjamin Burnham. The prosecution will take place at Den ver. A woods fire swept down upon Co balt, a small town In Ontario. The only material damage done was by the explosion of several tons of dyna mite by fire reaching the place where It was stored, In the edge of town. Twenty fine houses were completely wrecked. The Inmates had fled fear ing such a result, and no one was In jured. FlTiires from the bureau of statis tics of the department of agriculture, complied from the correspondents and agents of the bureau, show the area under winter wheat remaining In cul tivation on May 1 to have been about 25.623,000 no res. This Is per cent or about 1,718.000 acres less than the area reported as sown last fall, and 1 per cent, or about 241,000 acres less than the area of winter wheat reported as harvested last year. Nearly one-third of the loss this year, or about 570,000 acres, was in Kansns. In California the loss was 10 per cent, or 176.000 acres. Mich igan lost 7 per cent, or 78,000 acres. The largest percentage of loss In area wa3 26 In Washington. 19 In Oregon, 11 in Wisconsin and 9 In Idaho. But the combined loss In the three Pacific states, where the acreage in winter wheat Is 2.272,000, was only 377.00H acres, representing a loss of 5.038.000 bushels from last month, and they have a promise of 89.498,000 bushels agninst 38,954,000 bushels harvested last year. There Is a loss In Kansas of 7,000, 000 bushels from the April report, al though the condition advanced two points last month: Michigan Is off 2. 000.000 bushels and lost four points. These decreases rre due to the re duction In acreage. The 13 winter wheat states have a cmp of 378.6!9.000 bushels, or 22, 82S.OOO bushels less than a month ago. and show a decrease In acreage of 1.221.000. Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and Oklahoma made gains of one to three points In April. The Indicated crop for the country Is 2S. 000.000 bushels more than harvested last year. patch. The committee appointed by the mayor to make the Investigation consists of N. C. Haskell, William Pollman and C. C. Hellner. The ex penses of the committee while making the Investigation are to be borne equally by the Warren Construction company, manufacturers of the bltu llthlc pavement, and the Barber As phalt company. After Investigating the relative merit of the two pavements In Uolse, Walla Walla, Portland, and the sound cities, the committee will make a re port In writing to tho council which will then act upon the Front street Improvement. BERRY BOXES COST MORE. Senator Heyburn is critically 111 at his home at Washington. D. C. He can only recover by complete rest and assiduous care. The project to build a creamery at "Pomeroy, Wash., has been abandoned completely, and the local stockholders ; are having their notes returned. The largest lode mining hoist in Canada Is being put Into the Centre : Star mine at Rossland, B. C. It will be steam driven and with a capacity of 1200 horse power. "Doc" Lrayton, a Medical Lake bartender, Is being tried the second time charged with selling liquor to minors. The first trial resulted in a bung Jury, all but one wanting to con vict. A man giving his name as Esmond, has been arrested at Kent, Wash., charged with being the man who shot at Night Operator Melvln at Auburn, and robbed the till of the Northern Pacific depot. Melvln's Identification Is complete. In a head-on collision on the North ern Pacific, near Garrison, Mont., Engineer G. A. Hamilton was instant ly killed and Brakeman Fred Kar stead severely Injured. Engineer W. H. Porter and Fireman D. O'Conner, were sightly Injured. James D. Seeley, a school teacher, Is under arrest at Pomeroy charged with attempting to blackmail C. F. Dlnklns. a well known farmer. See ley claims to have evidence that Din kins has had Improper relations with his (Dlnklns') daughters. Approximately 2000 acreB of land under the Tleton canal have not been signed up. It will be necessary for the landowners to sign up or the canal will not be constructed, so say the re clamation officers. They state that if the land Is not signed up work will be stopped at an early date. Postmaster Robbed. G. W. Fouts. postmaster at River ton, La., nearly lost his life and was robbed of all comfort, according to his letter, which says: "For 20 years I had chronic liver complaint, which led to such a severe case of Jaundice that even my finger nails turned ye low; when my doctor prescribed Elec trie Bitters, which cured me and have kept me well for 11 years." Lumber Trust of the Coast Advance Prleesi of All Box Material. The following notice of an advance la the prices of boxes and box ma terial will interest strawberry growers of Umatilla county. The Oregon Dally Journal suys: The combine which is alleged by produce merchants to control the manufacture of boxes has advanced the price of the finished product from 18 to 35 per cent over the prices that maintained two months ago. The new prices have Just been put Into effect and the commission merchants on Front street and others who find It necessary to use boxes In their bus iness are raising a protest. They de clare that tt advance Is exorbitant and unwarranted. The average ad vance In the cost of boxes used by the commission merchants Is about 25 per cent. In a circular issued by the alleged combine announcing the boost in prices. It Is explained that such an ad vance was made' necessary by the In creased cost of logs and labor. The commission merchants say they would like to combine to show them why rpruce logs, from which boxes are manufactured, and labor have ad vanced 25 per cent. Bill Peugh, a Hheepherder, was thrown out of the Opera saloon at Prlnevllle Tuesday night while drunk, by John Dell, ' ex-clty marshal of Prlnevllle, and the following morning Peugh died. Dell is now held In the county jail charged with murder awaiting a hearing In the courts, It being alleged thut he clubbed the vie tim, inflicting fatal Injuries. Bill Peugh Is Bald to have been 70 years of age, while Dell is also a j,m; haired man and one of the most wire- ly Known residents of the county. Dell Is a veteran of the civil war and 65 years old. A post mortem exam ination disclosed that Peugh's neck was nearly dislocated. Prlnevllle Re view. Disturbed the Congregation. Long Creek Is going to have elec trie lights. The dynamo and the wire have already been ordered. Further more, Long Creek will have mechani cal power for running a feed mill or a sawmill, or for any of the various needs of a town the size of this. John Hughes has ordered a five horse power gasoline engine and 2000 feet of covered wire with which he will Install the electric light plant. The plant will be put on his residence properly and Mr. Hughes Intends to use the power for pumping water. I says that he can produce electricity cheaper than kerosene and that he believes the people of Long Creek will prefer the electric light. Delinquent Tax Sale at Wulla Walla Saturday. Whole blocks for $10 and lots from $1 to $4.50 was the way Wallula real estate sold at the delinquent tax sale held at the court house by Treasurer P. B. Hawley, at 10 o'clock Saturday morning, says the Walla Walla States. man. A. H. Harris earned the sobriquet of the "Wallula Land King" by buying In about 125 separate parcels of the property offered for sale at an aver age price of $1.60 a lot. Another month has passed and no trace of Jack Marmott, although every effort Is being made by his neighbors to get some trace of the missing man. A vigorous search of the ranch and surrounding gulleys waa made last week but without avail. A new the ory has been advanced by some who are acquainted with the man's recent history. It Is supposed that he has been murdered and his body hidden in a secluded spot. It Is said that he had a quarrel with a person whose name Is not revealed and that thlH may have something to do with his mysterious disappearance. It Is believed that he could not have gone any great (lis tance from the house, nor that he would have gone away and left the ranch In the condition In which It was found. Long Creek Ranger. Charles W. Wappensteln has been appointed chief of police of Seattle by Mayor Moore, He has been on the police force of that town 10 years. May Ho- ISellod I"Hin to Accomplish What the Authorities Should. The old days of the vigilante com mittee are being revived in Oregon, says the Long Creek Hanger. On Fri day night of last week a party of men whose identity is not positively known visited a secluded spot near Kilbride, burned a cabin and posted a notice to the occupants of the land that lynching would result If they did not leave the place within 48 hours. For some time horses have been disappearing In northern Grant coun ty and the persons who have been searching found a number of 'their animals In the section known as Para dlse and made the raid. For some time strangers have been found in the ranchers' pastures and when rancher would approach one of them the stranger would make ever effort to keep at a distance. Some of the parties who arc In this questionable business, it Is stated, live in Grant county, and others are not known here. RAKER WANTS PAVING.
