SAMUEL, Mgr. Madeay Building, 286 Washington Street, Portland, Ore. The following article from E. H. Shepard, of Hood River, gives a clear Insight Into the methods of fruit growing practiced In the Hood River district, and which have made Hood River apples famous around the world. Mr. Shepard says: Nature has favored Hood River with a soil full of potash, phosphates and other minerals necessary to pro duce high eiuality fruit, of good size, fine color, excellency of flavor and No. 1 shipping qualities; an Ideal cli-i mate for perfect development, warm days and cool nights; the ever-shining j sun kissing our fruit by day, giving Itl color, w hile Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams. ll.O'lo feet high with their! snow-capped peaks, cool our atmos-j phere at night. I will now tell you as best I can how we have done our part. By In-! vestigation some years ago we ascer-j tallied that Spltzenburgs and New- j towns were not only high quality fruit, but always In demand. We , found by experiment that they grew ; to perfection In Hood River soil and 1 climate. We observed that these two, varieties could be grown successfully! In few districts and these compara-j tlvely small. We then decided to I plant and grow them and have been ' continuing so to do ever since. i The point I wish to bring out here' for the benefit of everyone is. that : each individual, each locality, is par- tlcularly adapted to some one thing. I To do that one thing well and better; than anyone else will surely bring , success and a rich harvest. To illustrate. Los Angeles and vi cinity is famous for oranges and lem- ons, Fresno for grapes, Vacaviile for! apricots, Sacramento river for; peaclie.-. In Colorado, Gland June-j tion and Paonia nro celebrated for, apples. Rocky Ford for canteloupes. ' Parts of Missouri beat the world oil our old friend. Ben Davis, and. bi lbo nay, don't forget it is a grand state and supplies the government witli more and better mules than any ot:H r state in the Cniou. But to return to our subject. I j would say. do as Hood River and other districts have done, find out j something you can grow to perfee- j tion for which there is a good de- mand, and give it every care and at tention. Nurse It. cat with it. sleep' witli it. We began at the beginning by buying the best trees, the price j belli'-' no object. We buy them from I reliable nurserymen who we know s,-!ect tneir scions from parent tree- known to be bearers and producing fruit of fine color and excellent qual ity. We cultivate with unceasing care and in our orchards you will always find the moisture dust mulch and no weeds. We prune and shape the trees with tile rame care and fondness we would prune our child of bad habits and shape Its character. We spray thoroughly ror every dis ease or insect pest our orchards have or may have. Spraying now Is prac tically a definite science, and by un tiring energy and eternal vigilance every orchardist can grow a clean crop of apples. From the success achieved last year with five and six sprayines with arsenate of lead, we are convinced that this number of sprayings Is sufficient, If properly done at the following times, to In sure a clean crop: Once before the blossoms have fallen; next 10 days late, and two weeks after for the first brood. Two sprayings two weeks apart are sufficient for the second brood, the time to be determined by brooding cages. Should ther be a third or partial brood, give one spraying and determine the time In the same manner. 1 do not mean to say that a less number of sprayings would not be sufficient, but I do mean to say that spraying as I have outlined It will give and has given us practically clean apples with less than two per cent of worms. newspaper field by purchasing the Oneida Herald, the name of which he changed to Malad Entemrlse Ho was elected a member of the Idaho legislature from Oneida county In 1887. Wnlln Wallit Nursery Sends Order to the Orient. j The Northwestern Nursery com pany of this city has Just made a sub stantlnl shipment of fruit and shade trees to the orient. It having left Seat' tie on the steamship Lyra last week says the Walla Wulla L'nlon. The orders are for Rev. G. S. Cami lla of Hientsln. and Dr. Ts'ao of Pe kin, China, and were received through the offices of the American board of commissioners for foreign missions. One Interesting phase of the order Is the data In regard to the climate, which was deemed necessary so that the nursery might not send varieties not adapted to the conditions prevail ing there. The year Is divided Into two periods one embracing the wet months, and the other the dry months. The wet period only Includes the months of July and August, and the rest of the year Is designated us dry. The nver age temperature for the summer months Is between 70 and 81) degrees Fahrenheit, while the tempera' ire in winter seldom goes below zero. There Is little snoiv, but plenty of col l, dry winds. Among the fruit trees ordered v.vro apples, pears, cherry, pencil and plum. The Northwestern Nursery com pany made a very successful ,-lilp-ment to Manchuria last year, and re ports received later were to the effect that every one of the trees grew and thrived. All old-time cough syrups bind tho bowels. This Is wrong. A new Idea was advanced two years ngo In Ken nedy's Laxative Honey and Tar.
