The Oregon Dally Journal gives the
following account of the elopement of
Horace McKinley, the land thief, with
"Little Egypt," a dancing girl:
When Horace G. McKinley slipped
out of the country three months ago,
to the disappointment of the numer
ous victims of his timber land opera
tions, he was accompanied on the
steamer which carried him to Shang
hai by "Little Egypt." whose peculiar
talents have been displayed In every
city In the country.
Mrs. Horace McKinley, better
known as Marie Ware, remained be
hind and Is now In San Francisco, no
doubt dutifully awaiting the return of
her errant spouse. According to the
story which comes up from the Bay
city, McKinley succumbed to the
charms of "Little Egypt" just about
the time when he began to realize
that he was In imminent danger of
arrest and prosecution for his whole
sale forgeries of state school land cer
tificates. He determined on flight and
his charmer was persuaded to accom
pany him.
It is said that Pillsbury of Minne
apolis, son and heir of the million
aire, was a passenger on the same
eteamer, and this gave rise to the
ory that he had taken McKinley un
der his wing and had opened the way
for him to float a street railway pro
Jed in one of the large cities of China.
Pillsbury- and McKinley nre acquaint
ed but it Is doubtful whether the for
mer would allow himself to become
entangled with so notorious a crook as
McKinley is known to be.
It Is asserted that a determined ef
fort Is being made by the government
officials to locate McKinley and to
bring him back to this country.

Miss Faye Carney, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. M. J. Curncy. was last night
elected as iueen of the Eagles' car
nival to be given here shortly. The
final vote received by Miss Carney
was 2861. and was 564 more than
that cast for Miss Ruby Whittemore.
Since being elected as queen of the
coming carnival. Miss Carney has been
the subject of many congratulations
from her friends. Orders have been
given for the gown which she Is to
wear during the carnival.
DEATH OF MISS. WALMAN.
Passed Away From Effects of Con
sumption, Aged 22 Years.
Mrs. Mary Olivia Walman, wife oi
F. A. Walman, died yesterday at the
family home one mile east of Adams.
The deceased was 22 years of age,
and death was the result of consump
tion, with which she had been suffer
ing for a year. By her death she left
her husband and an tS-months-old
child.
The funeral was held this afternoon
at 2 o'clock, the Interment being in
the Finn cemetery near Adams.
Off to the Penitentiary.
Sheriff T. D. Taylor left this morn
ing for Salem with Brown, alias
Schlosser, who was recently sentenced
;o serve two years for forgery.

tor.) Two nnd twenty years since,
when the writer was Just beginning
his work as a teacher In public
speaking, he organized In Harvard
university, Cambridge, Mass., a Shak
sptre .club, known as the Harvard
Shakspere club.
One of the objects of the Harvard
Shakspere club was an effort to bring
the university and the theater Into
more intimate relations. And, In pur
suance of this design the director In
vited a number of the most distin
guished actors and playwrights in the
country to speak to the faculty nnd
students of the university and their
friends in Sander's theater, Cam
bridge. The first lecture was gpoUen by the
late Sir Henry Irving. When Mr.
Irving promised to lend his distin
guished presence to the Harvard
Shakspere club he expected to speak
during his Boston engagement, nnd at
some hour in the morning, although
no definite date and hour was fixed.
Mr. Irvlng's health did not permit
him ' to deliver the lecture during his
Boston engagement.
What did Mr. Irving do? He pledg
ed his word to the Harvard Shak
spere club. Did he break his prom
ise? He gave to the Harvard Shak
spere club nnd the friends of the club
one night of the most Important en
gagement he was to piny In this coun
try. He omitted one evening's per
formance In New York city. Journey
ed from New York to Boston and out
to Cambridge to fulfil his pledged
word to the Harvard Shakspere club.

orchardlsts have fulled to raise a fruit
crop, but this season they are deter
mined to have a crop If any extreme
of Industry and skill and scientific
methods will help In any way to se
cure It.
While the weather is very cold In
L'nlon county as yet and the orchards
have not advanced, yet there Is a fear
among orchardlsts that the buds will
swell and be killed by later cold
weather as for the past two years, and
so to prevent this disaster, it Is estl
mated that 6000 loads of manure
stave .been scattered In the various or
chard districts of the county, in hopes
of holding the frost In the ground
and thus preventing the trees from
making an early advance.
The method Is now being diligently
pursued all over the valley and every
effort will be made to prevent a third
failure of the apple crop.

The Walla Walla Evening Bulletin
was issued at Walla Walla yesterday
evening, under the management of the
disaffected republicans who are dis
satisfied with the way In which coun
ty politics in that county are being
run. Eugene Lorton, formerly editor
of the Walla Walla Union, nnd chair
man of the county central committee
of Walla Walla republicans, Is editor
nnd Rev. Andreas Bard, the well
known Episcopal minister of that
city, will do literary work for the new
paper. An attempt will be made to
make the new paper the official or
gan of Walla Walla republicans. The
Bulletin Is opposed to Senator An
keny. Kuukels In Washington.
Mr. and Mrs, A. Kunkel are now
In Washington, D. C, and will start
for home In a few days, expecting to
come by way of California and by
water from Sun Francisco to Port
land. They expect to arrive at home
In about 10 days. Mr. Kunkel was
II) for a week In Pennsylvania which
delayed them In returning somewhat.
They are having a very enjoyable
time In the national capital during
the session of congress and write en
tertainingly of their experiences there.
Poisoned Valuable Dog.
Some one poisoned a beautiful
Spaniel bitch belonging to Thomas
Milarkey yesterday evening, by throw
ing poisoned meat Into the yard at
his home on Garden street. The life
of the pet was saved by quick work,
but Mr. Milarkey says he will pay
J50 for the arrest and conviction of
the party committing this cowardly
deed. The dog Is perfectly harmless
and remains at home all the time,
and he cannot conceive of any reason
any one should have for poisoning it.
Horse Buyer Here.
E. r. Wilard, a prominent horse
buyer of Portland, Is a guest of Hotel
St. George today while looking over
the horse market here. He was form
erly of La Grande and carried on an
extensive hotse and cattle business
there before going to Portland. The
building of so much railroad in the
northwest has stimulated the horse
market greatly this winter and ther
Is a heavy demand for draft horses all
over the inland empire.
In Police Court.
In the police court this morning
one van was given five days for be
ing without visible means of support,
and another prisoner was arraigned,
against whom the Charge of "peddl
ing profane languaKe" had been book
ed on the police record. His case wns
taken under advisement by Judge Fltz
Gerald.
Fourteen Jacks Arrive.
Last evening the long expected
shipment of Jacks which A. C. Ruby
recently purchased in Kentucky, ar
rived In Pendleton. There are 14 an
imals In the lot, nnd they are all
large, fine mammoth Jacks. They
have been expected here for the past
10 days by Mr. Ruby.
