If not the greatest, industries in Wasco county. is the sheep business, and though lack of range has caused many to abandon what has always been one of the best saying Industries open to resi dents of the county, there ure still a large number who are gaining in earthly goods by sticking to the wool, says the Dalles Chronicle. Some idea of the extent of thi business may be obtained from th. semi-annual report of Stock Inspectoi J. Walsh, from which we find thai thore are 70 bands in the county, and a total of 134,672 sheep. COMING TO PORTLAND. Moffatt Rood Said to tic Building to the Timber Relt, A special from Denver says con cerning the Moffat railway: David H. Moffat, who is building a raUcpad through northern Colorado and Utah to Salt Lake, today made the following announcement: I intended to extend the Denver. Northwestern & Paclfio railroad to Portland, Ore. I want to get up In that section for the timber as well as for an outlet on the Pacific ocean. I will begin the extension when I am throught Utah." The construction of the Moffat road to Portland would put Denver on a direct Pacific coast-Gulf of Mexico line. Worthy of Consideration. The production of Oregon wheat, wool, hops, fruit, fish, lumber and gold brings millions of dollars Into Oregon each year. All these vast mil lions do little to permanently enrich the state If the money is s-nt away for commodities made elsewhere. The only way to build up this state Is to give preference to Oregon made goods. Life Insurance premiums drained us last year of more than one million dollars. This money can, and should be kept here. The Oregon Life Insurance company Is a well-organized home concern managed by well known Oivgontnns. Every dollar paid Tor premiums Is Invested In safe Ore lion securities, and the Interest or profits on these securities are also In vested here. Coming to the 1-Ynarr.
