Pocatello, being a railroad und an Indian town, has borne a bad reputa tion nnd has long been the rendezvous of the toughs from all the surround ing states and territories. Whiskey peddling among the Bannock and Fort Hall Indians has been carried on per sistently, In spite of the authorities, the old settlers winking at the law and encouraging the traffic in order to keep up the rent of their old shacks w hich were used for saloons and gam bling dens. Finally a group of railroad men or ganized a fight on gambling and against the old fogies, the bootleggers and gamblers, have succeeded In clos ing the town practically tight nnd this splendid body of 700 decent, moral young men employed on the Short Line, has been organized. The new building will be fully equipped with an excellent gymnasi um, baths, swimming pool, amusement parlors, library, reading and assembly room, and Pocatello thus takes u com mendable forward step. FIGHT OF GAS COMPANIES. imated 8000 cars, of whloh over 1400 cars have gone forward to date. That leaves but 1600 cars of apples, grapes and pears to be shipped. This total Is the largest ever recorded and ex ceeds last year'a shipments by over 2000 cars. Fruitgrowers will receive more than $5,750,000 for this output exclusive of canned or dried fruits. About 250 curs were also shipped by express In small lots. California will this year contribute between 70 and 75 uer cent of all the wine legitimately uroduced from grapes in the United States. The cost value of this vintage will be about $7,500,000, calculating the grapes at a paying price to the growers, coop erage not Included. The tract of Irrigated land comprises about 75,000 acres. Gen eral Ben Vnljoen, who acts for him self and 200 Boer families, promises several thousand agriculturists within two years. Fifty families are ready to move Iroin Chihuahua, Mexico, where they have been robbed of their investments und labor by the faulty land records. After building their homes and tilling the soli the Boers found they could not perfect titles and sought to get hack their money, but the Mexicans refused and threatened to confiscate the possessions. The Boers have ap pealed to ihe Mexican government for relief.
