Tile Hoard of Trade and Transportation Is hold ing a meeting here today to consider a report which has been prepared by its executive committee regarding the city's control of. Its passenger tran sit service. It Is the opinion of the committee, as cxpressed in the report, that the city should have the power to take back Its grants of franchises to railway corporations and substitute slant term grants, revocable at Its pleasure on payment of stated indem nity. Tile committee thinks that the subway to be constructed in the city will dominate and control the pres ent subway, and the surface ami ele vated lines as well. The committee recommends that the mayor, at the beginning of the next session of the legislature, and hefure the city shall grant additional transit franchisese, shall demand that the legislature su amend the Rapid Tranelt law as to give the rapid tran sit commission powers to separate contracts for construction from oper ating contracts; to provide for pipe galleries; to contract for .operating periods of less than 35 years; and to enable the city to avail Itself. C Sept. - The great Dominion exhibition was opened here today In the presence of thousands of visitors from all parts of the Dominion. Earl Orcy, governor general of Canada, and his staff, ar rived here yesterday and will attend the formal opening of the fair this afternoon. Nearly 12.000 Indians from different parts of the province have come here to see the governor general and pay him their respects. The exhibition will close on Octo ber 7. Among the special attractions will be a big lucrosse tournament, a baseball tournament and a big re iia.Ua on the river. SlansUury who re cently defeated Towns for the single Sculling championship of the world and his defeated opponent, have been Invited for a race which promises to attract many visitors from all parts of the country. It Is probable that Scholia, the crack narsnnm from the XJnlted States, will also take part In some of the racing events. The town Is crowded with visitors and the capac ity of the hotels Is taxed to the ut most. M. E. CONFERENCE. Tim South Church of Kentucky I in Scmlon, Leltchfleld, Ky., Sept. 27. The an nual conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, opened here today with a large attendance. Over 250 ministers of the church were present when the conference was called to order this morning. Owing to the Illness of Bishop A. (Toko Smith of Norfolk, Va., Bishop Wnrren A. Candler, of Atlanta, Oa., Is presiding at the conference.
