FHJHT PAGES. DAILY EAST ORMGONIA.V, PENDLETON, OltKGON, FRIDAY, JULY 31, 1905. PAGE 8 EVEN. AMONG THE EXCHANGES j OF THE INLAND EMPIRE I Suicide ul Twin Without giving a hint of hln inten tloii or a Hlireil of rfiiHun for his uc tlon, Coin-go Johnson, thii proprietor of a small restaurant on Twelfth av enue, behind the Jones building, shot himself through the head with a rifle on Thursday evening am tiled Instant ly, nays the Twin Falls News. I.. H. Hale and tho wife of the suicide were eye-wit nes.es of the tragedy. Hale and Johnson were sitting In a room conversing. Johnson appeared to he In low spirits. Ho wrote a letter to 'his mother and read It to Hale. Picking up -his rifle, which stood against tho wall noar by, Johnson re marked that It was a Rood weapon. Before his Intent could ho detected, he placed the muzzle of the weapon beneath his right ear and pulled the trigger. Tho bullet passed through his head coming out above and behind tho left ear. Death wan instantane ous. Mrs. Johnson stepped Into an ad Joining room to put the children to bed Just as her husband grasped the rifle. She heard tho shot and rushed Into the room where her husband was, In time to see him topple over. Increasing Wnt-r Supply. Tho water company has developed the fact that there Is more artesian water In Hull's gulch than had been supposed. At the time of the flood In Juno one of the wells In that gulch was washed out. This well supplied about 160,000 gallons of water dally. It took a long time to dig out the wrecked top and put the well In or der again. This work satisfied the company there was more water there and a new 6-lnch well has been sunk, It and the old well emptying Into 7-lnch pipe. Tho Joint flow of the two Is some 450.000 gallons. Indicat ing nearly 300.000 gallons of added dally supply. Tho plan Is to put down till another well of greater size. Boise Statesman. Close Coll by a Rnttlewnuke. While Harvey O. Barnes, who re sides on tho Coffleld plnce, Monday afternoon was sitting on some bed springs which he carelessly neglected to cover with a spread as usual, with Ms little daughter Velma, sitting be tween his knees, whom ho was feed ing, he suddenly became aware of the presenco of a rattlesnake In the springs. Just beneath his thighs and about three Inches from tho Infant's feet. Knowing their traits quite well, his movements were cautious to avoid angering the reptile. Ho first moved DAILY MARKET REPORT. Very l.lttle Public Intercut It Mani fested. San r'runcisco, July 21. Tho dute of the fight between Jimmy Brltt and "Kid" Sullivan has arrived, but there appears to be little or no Increase of Interest in the event. Neveriheless, the Hayes Valley club, under whose auspices the mill Is to take place, ex pects a fair sized crowd on hand to night, basing their expectations on the fact that Itrltt has a host of follow ers among the sporting fraternity who never fall to turn out to see him fight. The luck of Interest In the bout Is due chiefly to the belief that the lad from the national capital Is no match for Brltt and that the fight will conse quently be a one-sided affair. The fight followers were desirous of seeing Brltt and "Battling" Nelson in the ring again, and are disappointed that Brltt should side step a match with the Dane and take on Sullivan, who Is regarded as an eusy mark. A Irofltablo Year for Sheepmen. This has been a profitablo year for sheepmen. The advantages of feodr ing or raising, have been harped on incessantly for a whole season. Every farmer's ditty Is sot to the same tune. Tho comparative merltB of cattle, sheep and hogB as farm animals have been discussed in every farm Journal during tho past six months. Now tho desired effect has been obtained. The farmers are all ready to raise sheep. Tho epidemic has spread even to stenographers and dry goods sales men. Before taking the final step, these prospective shecpralsers would do well to remember one or two Inter esting facts. It requires more than money to go Into the sheep business. Quito a few men will tell you that It would be a great advantage to have nma utile knowledge of sheen before Investing your money. If a cobbler h anvni 16000 at his trade and In vests the same In a flock of breeding ewes In the fall of 1906, the chances are that he will be again at his last, a sadder and wiser cobbler, In the fall of 1908. In other words, everybody can't raise sheep. And It's a food the babe from its reach and thon "went straight up." Ho behcad' d the reptile with a pair of pruning hoops; It had light rattles and a button. floldendule Sentinel. Shot by Child. While Mr. and Mrs: Daniels of Cav endish were In Iceland last Saturday one of their children was shot by a little 7-year-old brother with a 22-cal-llier rifle, the ball going through the shoulder, and Inflicting an ugly wound. It seems that the children were left at home and they got to playing with the guns that were in tho house with the above result. Dr. Lysle of Peck, happened to be in a cherry orchard nearby when the acci dent occurred and he was hastily sum moned and dressed tho wound. It Is thought that the wound, whllo serious, Is not necessarily fatal. Inland Sen tinel. Ptinthor In lost Valley. A. If. Stanley, who came In from I,ono Rock yesterday evening, reports that the people of Lost Valley, six miles from Lone Rock, ore greatly stirred up over the presence of a large panther that Is roaming at will through that neighborhood and that many settlers have temporarily aban doned their homes. Many calves and sheep or the neighborhood have been slain by the ferocious animal. The panther Is said to be a very large one and nobody seems willing to at tempt his capture. Heppner Times. StubbU'fleld Will Case, Apimlcl. The case entitled C. M. Radcr et al vs. Cassann Stubblefleld. was yester day appealed by Mrs. Stubblefleld to the supremo court by her attorneys, C. E. Cochran, of Union, T. H. Craw ford of La Orande, and Happy ft Hlndman of Spokane. Tho case Is an attempt to break the will of the lato Joseph Stubblefleld, as It particu larly relates to the maintenance of the Stubblefleld home In this city. Walla Walla Union. Boise River Falling. The water has been going down inpldly in the river for the paBt week and It has now assumed the propor tions of a decided shortage, because the companies near the head have token up all the water. The people of this section cannot hope for relief soon, as Judge Stewart Is quite sk'k and cannot, without endangering his life, render a decision. It Is hoped the Judgn may soon recover. Cald well News. , thing they can't. Shepherd's Bulle tin. In an automobile accident cuused by reckless speeding. J. P. Morrow and T. A. Rubrecht were killed at Superior, Wis. Why pay 3800 to 11000 for a motor vchlclo when you -can got an Oriental Buckboard for one-half the price. The Buckboard will climb hills, and Is good for from 3 to 36 miles per hour. What More Can Pendleton People Ask For? When old-time residents and highly-respected people of Pendleton makes such statements as the follow ing, it must carry conviction to every reader: D W. Cook, 70 years old and re tired from active business, now living on Main .street, says: "The dull, dragging pain In the small of my back felt as If two giants were tearing me apart and at times I felt so miserable that I could not stand or walk and was confined to my bed, Urinary weakness set In, especially at night, and I was falling physically every day. At this time I happened to read an ad about Doan's Kidney Pills and was much Impressed with the sincerity of the testimony, which was much similar to the one I am making now. I got a box of pills at the Brock ft McComas Co. drug store and they helped me so that I continued using them until I had taken several boxes. Then I could eat, sleep and' get around again without suffering the least bit of physical pain. ' I Indorse all of the claims made for Doan's Kidney Pills." For sale by all dealers. Price 60 cents.
