Whiteway & Hicks, the Welser con tractors were the fortunate bidden for the Warren-BlK creek wagon road their proposal to do all the 'work called for In the advertisement for a total sum of $25,000 being considered the best bid, and that firm gets the contract. The work Includes about 35 miles of road constructions, with a bridge across the south fork of the Salmon river. But one other bid was received for the entire work, that of the Northwestern Bridge & Construc tion company. The road will be built on what Is known as Elk creek summit route which the comminslon accepted as ac commodating the greater number of people. The state will bear half the expense of the road, the balance of the money being raised by subscription. Twelve thousand dollars has been subscribed already and It Is not believed any trouble will be experienced In raising the remainder. The Werdenhoff com pany came forward with a check for $5000 and the Independence contrib uted $2600. Meadows, Warren, Wel ger and Idaho county gave $1000 each and Fred Burgdorf $500. Hyberger has sold to Leon La Francs, through the White Salmon Land company, his 10-acre ranch ln the Cook settlement for $1500 Mr. Hyberger has owned the land but two years and this year took off ln the neighborhood of $700 worth of ber ries. Co. reports having re ceived by one team 43 bags of wool, weighing 20,099 pounds. This load was hauled ln by S. W. Gould of Skulls Springs. Some of the wool bags weighed 500 pounds and a large ma jority of them went over 600 pounds. If any one on the line can show of having received a larger load of wool than this they will have to show us, and prove It, too. Ontario Democrat. Negro to tlio Penitentiary. Ed Andrew, the negro who was found milltv of assault with a dan gerous weapon on the person of Fred Lemke, a week ago, was sentenced by Judge Bradshaw this morning to a iwo-vears term ln the penitentiary, and was taken to Salem this after noon. In the chase the best dog was killed and It foil to the lot of Mr. McMillan to get the lucky shot that ended the career of one of the largest boars killed this season In this section.
