The grain dealers predlc that the new barley crop will probably open up at 75 cents per hundred pounds, as. the California barley I being pur chased In the field before It is harvest FA I IKS TO NOMK. Kf forts of Passengers lo Itreiik Down Kates, Fail. Sterrago rates to Nome remained hard and fast at the agreed upon Bcule all day Thursday In the face of re peated and persistent efforts of KO or 60 prospective passengers to break them down by bidding against each other, says the Seattle News. These efforts continued throughout the day, but when night fell on the last day preceding the departure of the first vessels of the fleet the agreed upon scale of rates remained In ef fect, unbroken. Passenger rates to Nome nre fixed ouch year by agreement among the several steamship owners and agents operating vessels to that port. Each year heretofore there has been more or less departure from the agreed upon scale of rates during the last hours before the sailing of the first fl'-t of vessels. The experience of many old-time Nomeltes In this regard led them to believe that the same game could be worked again this season, so they banded themselves together In par ties of six or eight and worked all day yesterday .to that end. Passenger rates to Nome this sea son have been $100 and $75 flint class, $50 and $85 Intermediate, and $40 straight for the steerage. With the failure of these small parties to break down the rates there developed late yesterday additional steerage business which was not expected by the agents, and the vessels sailing to day will have larger steerage lists than they expected last night.
