BIGHT PAGES. DAILY EAST OREGONIAN, PENDLETON, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRIL 28, 1905. PAGES SEVEN. AMONG THE EXCHANGES OF THE INLAND EMPIRE First Through-River Freight. C. F. Allen, lessee of the steamer Jdounliilii Gem,, fully realizes the lm Fonume of the open-river-to-the-sea project, una It Is learned that he Is planning to show hi.- view of the Importune- of the ii. rtaKe roud by send ing the 'Mountain Qem to the porU-ge with 1r tirst cargo of freight ever handled from the upper river. The portage will be completed at some date In May and the river will be at the best stage of water the lat ter part bf that month or early In June. The trip over the section of the river between Riparla and the portage can then be successfully run, and Captain Grey Ih thoroughly In. formed regarding the stream. The trip will be one of great Importance to the industrial development of the Inland Empire region, as it will dem snstrate that the open river and In dependent transportation Is a practi cal thing. It is said to be the plan to load the boat with wheat at Lewlston and have a boat from Portland In readl ess at the lower end of the portage to move the cargo on down to the Oregon metropolis without delay. The big fair in Portland will then be In progress, and there Is no question but a big passenger list can be secured to make the Important Journey and Join In celebrating the event. Lewis ton Tribune. Increased Potrt&l Business. A comparative statement of the business of Baker City postofflce for the year 1904 and 1905 shows a de elded Increase. The receipts from tamps, second-class postage and box rents for 1905 totaled J16.229.93 for 1904, the year ending March SI, and for the same period, 1905, f 16,621.87. The money orders Issued for the year 1904, ending March 31, totaled 9121.- 08.49, and for the same period 1905, tl23.159.9li. During the same period there was a large increase in the amount of money orders paid out at this office and the only conclusion to be drawn from these figures Is that there has been an Increase In population In Baker City and Baker county. v ., Some of the Increase In the post office business has doubtless been due to the issuance of orders to Jap. anexe sending money to their home government for war purposes, but the large Increase In money orders paid : Be skeptical if you will; be J prudent If you must, but be NEVER Investigate before you con ileum, and be open to conviction while investigating. Brown, who lives at the corner of Turner and B. streets, says: "I was unable to stoop without suf fering the most Intense pain across the small of my back and through my kidneys. I got my first box of Doan's Kidney Pills at the Brock & McComas Co. drug store. I was , so sore and lame that I could not stoop at the sink to wash. Doan's Kidney Pills did away with the trou ble. If I did not honestly think that Doan's Kidney Pills acted up to the representations made by them, I would not set my name to an In dorsement. I know others who have used Doan's Kidney Pills with the same satisfaction." For sale by all dealers. Price B0 cents. Foster-Mllburn Co., Buffalo, N. Y., sole agents for the United States. Bond, yes terday, while talking to a group of friends. Mr. Bond Is a practical and successful farmer and knows whereof he speaks. "This county never looked better than It does today. Crops are In a splendid condition and we have had plenty of rain and It does not matter much whether we have rain or not. We can raise crops by the right kind of work. Ail we need here Is farmers to work, not rain, not windy Oregon ians and not even Irrigation so much dry farming and hard work are do- Ing the business. "I came here five or six years ago with $496. I suppose I could sell out today for $20,000. I know very well I would not take that for my holdings. Other Mlssourlans are now coming Into the country which Is now coming to the front. Within a radi us of 10 miles of Baker City there are ns fine ranches as can be found anywhere, and there are 10,000 acres at least, of government land that I consider today worth $25 per acre. I am cultivating . nearly 1400 acres myself and own, with members of my family, something over 2000 acres. "Give us more progressive farmers and we will make this county bloom like a rose garden."
