An alleged" commercial traveler, speaking to the ' Baker City Herald about Ashland, from the standpoint of a temperance town, says that while there are no saloons in Ashland, that drunkenness is more prevalent than when saloons were allowed and that the drug stores sell whiskey by the barrel. This Is the testimony of a moral coward and a prejudiced liar, in the first place, a letter published In the East Oregonlan from.M. H. Lee, of this county, and written from Ash lartd a few days ago, spoke emphati cally of the good moral conditions of Ashland and ha-' there been any drunkenness noticeable It would have been mentioned by this correspon dent who. wns'looking over Southern Oregon for a place to locate perma nently. In the second place, Ashland is a railroad town and every year the companies are shutting down more closely upon drunkenness and It was the railroad men themselves who made prohibition possible In Ashland. The fact that railroad companies publicly post rules against employes even frequenting saloons, namiuuny. Is a striking testimony to the public that the traffic is dangerous, else railroad companies would not care for drunken engineers and conductors handling the lives of "the public. If it is dangerous for this class of em ployes, why not for others? In the next dace drug stores do not furnish a loafing place where crowds may gather and "soak up" gradually. A man who buys liquor at a drug store usually takes it home aiia if there is any evil effects from that bottle it Is confined to the drink er's home and Is not paraded on the street. Speaking for Itself, the East Oregonlan is delighted to see this work begin and has long agitat ed such a move. It would have paved the street abutting its property years ago, had adjoining property holders been willing to undertake the work. Then after deciding to pave the treets, cause every property owner to place concrete sidewalks in front of the buildings. The day of the wooden sidewalk on main streets Is past. It is almost as antiquated as ., oianhnard roof among the br'ck blocks of a modern city. Then 'after deciding- definitely to pave the street, make some provision for a park or a resting place and a resort for 'the people In the summer evenings. The $10 reward for a pub lie seat In Pendleton Is still posted. DOES PORTLAND MEAN IT? Idle Portland capital could have bullded a railroad Into Klamath coun ty 20 years ago, thereoy opening up the entire central Oregon district and clinching all the tributary trade for Portland. Now that San Francisco is tapping that district, Portland forever loses a large hunk of Oregon terri tory. Since the ' teachers of normal schools can draw their pay, appropri ation or no appropriation, n ex pected that the Portland Oregonlan crowd will get out an Injunction it these salaries being paid aB i covery.
