For nearly a week now the rail road surveying party has been work ing southward from this place, and n line of slakes marks the route over which they have gone. Hut as to the people by whom they are employed, nothing more has been ascertained. The members of the party state that they are under orders not to discuss that matter, and the men behind the Pendleton- Railroad & Coal company also say they are not at liberty to say by whom the party was sent out. However, two of tile latter have made statements that the line is being run for the Pendleton Uallroad & Coal company, and that it Is to establish ! the route for the road. Also, the local men who are pro moting tin. new road are firm In their statements that tliey believe the mad Is to be built In the near future. However, when askvd from whence the backing is coining, they fight shy Wlllamelt of the question, though one of them Will Moore Is III today with an at tuck of the grip. E. B. Leroy Hall will leave Mon day for Portland, where lie will re main a week. He will attend the Chapman campaign and also a Bap tist ministers' conference, at which it is expected all the Baptist minis ters of the state will be present. Preparing Botany Exhibit. Prof. W. H. Bleakney, of Pendle ton Acndemy, Is now busy preparing an extensive botanical exhibit for the Lewis and Clark fair. In its large double store room the Fair. Is In position to display its large stock to good advantage. A person enter ing the store is impressed with the excellent judgment shown In the dis play of the stock and the arrange ment ot the various departments. The south door opens Into the ladies' section and on the right is the fancy dress goods while 111 the left Is the corset section. The ladies' ready-to-wear department occupies the rear of the south side. In the center Is the cashier's and Mr. Tarbet, the pro prietor's offices, which are surround ed by broad wrapping counters.
