Smith, the sheep king of Grunt county, pussed through Surap ter yesterday en route to England. With his lugguge was a gigantic trav eling bag, decorated with foreign la bels from St. Petersburg, . Moscow, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Switzer land, Italy, India, Australia and New Zealand. Mr. Smith and his brothers own innumerable sheep, which range in Grant, Harney and Malheur coun ties. He Is a very wealthy man and has circumnavigated the globe twice. He enjoys an opportunity this year to contract his entire 1005 wool clip at 17 cents, but Is holding for a higher figure, which he believes Inevitable. Sumpter Miner. New Hotel at Carson. Monday morning we visited the Mineral Springs hotel, near Carson, They are rushing work on the hotel, the frame work being completed, and now the carpenters are putting on rustic and roofing. The ground has been leveled for the bath rooms for the present. The hotel Is a three Story with a basement and will have a dining room that will seat 100 guests. The hotel Is In a sightly place, and well sheltered from She wind. We predlet that the new hotel will enjoy a good business when It Is completed. The Dalles Chronicle. , .. Mclntlre, at Bossburg, July 22 last, who was the second time con victed by a Jury last Saturday in the superior court of murder In the second degree, appeared before Judge C T. Warren this morning and re ceived his sentence of. 30 years In the penitentiary. Taylor declared he had nothing to say as to why sentence should not be pronounced against' him, and if the thrust of the law touched a tender spot In his con science he did not show It. Building permit statistics from the various cities of the country for Feb ruary, published by the American Contractor, show the following sta tistics for the three largest cities In this state: Seattle, 639 permits, $459, 500; Spokane, 145 permits, 1186.813; Tacoma, 135 permits, $155,475. Spokesman-Review. Precocious Dishonesty. Archie Phillips, 9 years old, was detected opening the mall boxes In the postofflce at Coeur d'Alene. There has been many complaints of late of mall being lost, and It Is now thought he has been tampering with It for some time. The matter has been repcrtc-d to the postofflce lnr specter. Children and Mutches. Dr. Geary Informs us that the little son and daughter of Mrs. Vanle Chancellor were quite seriously burned Thursday evening. It seems the little boy was playing with matches and 'accidentally set his clothing on fire. The girl burned her hands quite bad In putting the fire out. Burns Times-Herald. Light Plunt Begun. E. J. Forsythe has commenced ac tive work on the new electric light power. It will be located on Benja min Boswell's farm, one mile west of town.
