Feb. 27. Weather fine and warm in daytime, but freezing a lit tle at night. The grass is beginning to start. Ttie telephone line between here and Pendleton has not been working for some time, and causes a great in convenience. However, there Is a new line start ed, which already is as far as the Rock. Perhaps we may have steady communication after a while. Mrs. F.d Rrehm returned last night from Portland, where she has spent the winter. She reports lots of sick ness in that city. E. B. Gambee and wife have taken a trip to Southern California. Sain Neal and Millard Dick have gone to their cattle camp on Middle Cold Springs. Bill Futter is rallying his forces and moving his teams to his Willow Spring ranch to put In his crop. Bert and Elmer'fiibbs have return ed home from Pendleton, where they were summoned to attend the funeral of their "sister, Mrs. Grace Boynton GOOD YEAR FOR STOCKMEN. C. .7. Mlllis Speaks Encouragingly of Comlltons. "The year 1S05 promises unexam pled prosperity for cattle and sheep men throughout the Inland Empire," said C. J. Millis, livestock agent of the O. R. & N. 'Co., to the Oregon Daily Journal. "People in this part of the state probably believe that the past winter has been disastrous to the stockmen In Eastern Oregon and Washington and the whole of Idaho, because the weather has been severe. Such an Impression Is based on ignor ance of the conditions in the Inland Empire. "Whenever hay is plentiful live stock there is carried safely through the severest winters. The haystack is the stockman's insurance policy, and the flock owners had laid in such a liberal store of that variety of food that they were able to get through the hard months without appreciable losses. Some losses always occur in the winter. But they have been at a minimum this year, and the situation otherwise Is such as to assure good times to those engaged in that indus try. "Prices are medium. This induces owners to sell and buyers to buy, and causes a liberal movement of live stock. "Wool raisers will be carried on a high tide of prosperity this year. Probably more Wool has been con tracted for the 1905 clip than ever before In the history of the industry in the Northwest. The Eastern de mand appears to be strong, and rep resentatives of the large handlers are anxious to sign the clips for 105 de livery. I have not known of such gen eral wool contracting In the past five years. "With the demand as strong as It now Is, sheep breeders are offered gilt-edge prices, and may secure a promise from responsible houses that is the same as money In the bank, for these contracts may be negotiated at the banks and are a basis for loans up to almost 100 per cent of the amount of wool expected to be shorn." Incredible Brutality. It would have been Incredible brutality if Charles F. Lemberger, of Syracuse, X. Y., had not done the best he could for his suffering son. "My boy," he says, "cut a fearful gash over his left eye, so I applied Bucklen's Arnica Salve, which quick ly healed It and saved his eye." Good for burns and ulcers too.
