"My father," said Wellington's son, "deemed Washington the purest and noblest churacter of moderu time pos sibly of all time aud, considering the raw troops with which he had to op pose the trained aud veteran soldiers of England, also a great general." Another Interesting statement which the second duke made to General Wil son, who writes to the Cornhlll, was that when bis father was assigned to the command of an expedition to be ent out against the city of Washing ton and New Orleans In 1814 he de clined the command chiefly on the ground that be would not light against Washington's countrymen. And when bis government asked for the names of three officers from whom a com mander eould be selected Wellington wrote. "Sir Edward Pakenbam, Sir Edwaad Pakenbam,' Sir Edward Pak enham," and so poor Sir Edward, his brother-in-law, was sent to New Or leans to meet bis death in the most disastrous defeat ever sustained by British army. St. James' Qasette. Some Goraaaola. -., The wealthy gorniuuds of Rome cher ished a strong partiality for song birds. Both Horace and Martial refer with approval v to roast thrush, and Ovid recommends "a crown of thrushes" as a lover's present to his mistress. Thrushes' breasts were ode of the In gredients of the celebrated Aplclan dish, "Patina aplciana," which also In cluded beccaflcos, mushrooms, tow's udder, fish and chickens, rivaling the heterogeneous contents pf a gypsy's "pot au feu." ; .' '' Horace relates that the sous of Ac tius, to stimulate their appetite for dinner, lunched on "nightingales of monstrous price," and Varro tells us of the aviary of Lucullus, which was also a "salle a manger," so that the epicure gratified his ears and bis palate simultaneously, feasting upon the deli cate warblers whose congeners, uncon scious of their coming doom, were dis coursing meanwhile the most exquisite music. Oregon. . OSTEOPATHY. Ques. Do Osteooaths believe In ths germ theory of disease T Ans. Yes. Ques. Then why do they say dis eases are caused by slight displace ment of bones, eto.T Explain, Ans. The body In perfect health. Is proof against germs. The blood Is the best germicide and th only one that can operate within thi body. When the bony or muscular obstruc tions cut oft the healthy blood supply to any organ, the germ aotlng on that particular organ gets a foothold and propagates. The bony or muscular obstruction is th predisposing cause, the germ th active cause. How then fight th germt Th Idea that a medioln Is Intro duced to kill th germ Is erroneous and Is claimed by no physician. Th blood Is th only germicide that can act within th body, therefor remove th bony and muscular obstruction and permit th blood to do Its work. This Is what th Osteopath does In treating germ diseases. And It ex plains why th Osteopath can abert typhoid fever, pneumonia,- la grlpp, etc., while th medical doctors say they must run their course.
