Harper,- one of the proprie tors of the Pendleton creamery, arriv ed from La Grande, this morning to moor over the . work being done on jtheir building and to make prepara tions for Installing the machinery as soon as the building Is inclosed. George wV. Hunt and family, of Portland, are In the city on their way to Pine Valleyv to visit relatives. Mr. Hunt was liulljr of the W. & C ft railroad from Pendleton to Dayton, wash., and has sheep Interests at Pine Valley Baker City Democrat. James York, a pioneer, of Baker county. Is here with u carload of work horses from his, Baker County farm. Mr. York is one of -the oldest horse growers in the pastern portion of the state, having owned a large horse ranMi on North Powder river for the past 30 years. Miss Olive. Jones will leave tomor row morning for Pendleton, where she will attend the marriage of her friend,' Miss Hazel Bickers to Mr. Joseph Owenhouse, which takes place Wednesday. She will visit friends in Pendleton several days before return ing, La Grande Observer. ; Mayor W. F. Matlock returned from Portland and Salem today, where he bas been on a business vist. He will return to Salem In a few days to at tend a meeting of the state agricul tural boarfe, at which time It will be decided whether a track meet will be held on the state fair grounds next fall. E. J. Wilbur, of Meacham Creek. Is In the city today on a trading trip. He says the range Is excellent in the foothills and stock in good condition. There has been less snow in that part of the country the past winter than for 20 years. Unless there Is an abundance of rain, he fears the sum mer and fall range will be very short. A. W. Harper, cashier of the First National Bank of Volln, 8. D., is in the city today on a tour of Inspection of the Northwest. He accompanied his brother, O. E. , Harper of La Grande, one of the proprietors of the Pendleton creamery. Thls Is A. W. Harper's first visit to the coast and he is well plessed with the country. W. A. Storte, superintendent of the bridge and 'building department of the O. R. & fj. company, went to La Grande last night on business. The first publication of the amount of money secured towards the erec tion of a Young Men's Christian as sociation building was made yester day, says the Walla Walla Union.. Mr. Wilcox, secretary of the asso ciation, who is in town prosecuting the business of the new building, gave out the Information that In addic tion to the original gift from Mrs. Reynolds, the committee had raised by their own efforts about $10,000. The building fund of the Young Men's Christian association now amounts to more than $30,000. The exact sum is $30,013. This amount Is given on the suppo sition that $20,000 net to the build lng fund will be realized from the sale of the property proposed to be given by Mrs. Reynolds. The new subscriptions secured since the begin ning of the year aggregate $10,013. The canvass has thus far been con ducted quietly and without much flourish of trumpets, no public an nouncement of the total amount hav ing heretofore been made. The Needham meetings at the Pres byterian church will continue through the week with a 3 o'clock meeting every afternoon and a regular eve ning service at 7:30.
