An Irish Association Is the Beat Equipped Amateur Organisation In the United States Foot Race From a Few Paces to a Mile and Half AU 'Round Athletic Events. New York, Feb. 4. Lovers of ath letics will have a chance to witness the cream of the athletic world In competition in Madison Square garden tonight, when the Greater New York Irish A. A. will bold its annual ath letic carnival of sports. The associa tion is probably the largest and best equipped amateur athletic club in the country. There is hardly a member of it but is personally Interested In sports, and they hold among them no less than 27 championships. Among the events to be contested tonight are a 300-yard handicap run, a 600-yard novice race, a 1000-yard handicap run and a mile and a half handicap race. Then there will be a running high jump, handicap; an 880 yard relay race for school boys; a 2 mlle handicap relay race for four men teams; throwing the 66-pound weight from a stand; putting the 28 pound Rhot; the 10-mlle run for the A. A. U. championship; a one-mile intercollegiate relay race from scratch and a game of old Gaelic football. Probably the most Interest centers In the 10-mlle championship run, the winner of which will receive a diamond-studded gold medal donated by John D. rrfmminfl. All the best dis tance runners In the amateur ranks. Including Champion Joyce and E. P. Carr, will start In the race for this prize. The carnival will be open to all registered Rthletes. whether mem bers of the athletic clubs or not. The entry list is the largest In the hlMory of Indoor meets In the metropolis and unless all signs go astray several new records will be established. London, Feb. 4. The English press continues to ring with high praise ot Ambassador Choate, announcement of whose Intended retirement has been received with a feeling of genu ine regret that Is absolutely without precedent. The following paragraph from the current Issue of "Black and White." Is a fair sample of the friendly sentiment that has found ex pression In newspapers and period! cala throughout the 'country: "In all the long line of distinguished men who have filled the post of American ambassador at the court of St. James, none has enjoyed a wider popularity than Mr. Choate, and none will be missed and regretted more sincerely on this side of the Atlantic when In the course of a few .months he presents, as he has decided to do, his letters of recall. We In England have come to regard the American ambassador as much more than diplomat. He Is, In a way, a public Institution, and the part that he plays In our social life Is almost as active and Intimate as if he were one of our public men. "On all sorts of ceremonial occa sions and celebrations the American ambassador Is Invited to deliver ora tlons, which are Invariably models ot felicity, and which are unchllled by that formality and reserve Imposed by tradition on the utterances of other diplomatists. The art of apt and graceful speech has been cult! vated to a high degree of perfection In the states, but none of Mr. Choate's predecessors has excelled him In Its practice; and his withdrawal from our midst will Indeed be a sensible loss to many sides of our social ac tivity. Of his qualities as a diploma tist it is possible to speak as high ly, for during his residence In England several anxious questions between the United States and Great Britain have come up for adjustment, and their settlement has been due In no small measure to his exertions. He under stood the English people, and he liked them as much as they liked him; and It should be some satlsfaC' tlon to him to know that he returns to his own country having helped to bring about a better understanding between the two English-speaking na tlons than has ever before In the! history prevslled."
