Ill the police court this morning John Jackson was sentenced to serve 10 days in Jail, or to pay a fine of $6 for being .drunk and acting In a disorderly manner. Jackson Is a ranch laborer and was arrested by Officer Coffman. He was evidently gallantly Inclined, en tirely too much so, and attracted the officer's attention by walking be tween two ladies on Main street, and offering each of them his arm. In stead, his offer was not accepted, and In a few minutes he wus cuught by Coffman, who had to struggle con siderably with his prisoner before he finally landed him in jail. Reappoint Old Commission. . Governor Chumberlatn yesterduy afternoon reappointed the members of the old text book commission to compose that body for the next four years. This commission was named by ex-Governor Geer four years ago and' is composed of William Colvlg, of Jacksonville,: P. L. Campbell, of Eugene; C. A. Johns, of Baker City, and H. W. Scott and W. M. Ladd of Portland. Although considerable pres sure was brought to bear upon Gov ernor Chamberlain by democratic cundldates for places on the com mission the governor threw aside all partisan feelings in the matter and appointed the old board, four of whom are republicans. Another New Duelling. W. D. Hodder Is preparing to build a 12800 residence on the north side of the river, mention of this being omitted from the list of new dwellings published yesterday. Work on the foundations is now In progress. i W ill Move to Town for School. 0. B. Isaac, a farmer residing on McKay creek, has purchased the res idence belonging to G. I. La Dow, on West Court street and will move to this city for the purpose of sending his children to school. Still Another Dwelling. G. I. Rader went to Walla Walla on the afternoon tram yesterday for a short business trip. H. T. Peck and wife ' arrived last night on the 6:30 train and are reg istered at the Bowman. J. W. Sklles left last evening for a business trip to Chicago. He will be absent but a short time. William Mills, a well known farm er of the Juniper district, is spend nlg a tew days in town. Mrs. W. H. Bohnankamp, of La Grande, passed through last evening on a visit to Walla Walla. S. D. Phay,- who has been ill for some time with inflammatory rheu matism, is now Improving. Henry Blackwell of Long Creek, is a guest of Hotel St. Oeorge today, while here on a business trip. Mrs. Q. S. Bell and family left this morning for San Jose, Cal., where they will visit Mrs. Bell's mother. G. A. R. McGreer is in the city from Weston. He was formerly engaged In the drug business at that place. M. A. Sturdlvant and Glenn Lewis, of Pilot Rock, came in yesterday and are now stopping at the Bowman hotel. W. A. Storle went last evening to Walla Walla on business connected with the bridge and building depart ment of the O. R. & N. Pete Smith, of the Hotel St. George cafe, has gone to Portland for a few days to recuperate after a se vere attack of the grip. F. B. Holbrook, manager of the Oregon Land and Water company, of Irrlgon, came up on the morning train for a short business visit. T. J. Nlxdorff. formerly O, K. & -V. night operator here, returned last night from the east, where he has been for some time past in company with Ills mother. ; . J. W. Casey, traveling freight and passenger agent for the Chicago, Mil waukee & St. Paul railway, came up from Portland yesterday and left for Spokane at il o'clock. J. L. Clark, who farms a large tract of land on the reservation, is in the city today on business. The pros pects for a wheat crop are now excel lent on the reservation. J. L. Meier and family will move In a few days to Freewater, where they will reside until spring. They will then move onto the fruit farm which they traded valley lands for last summer. - Fred Jackmun, who was suffering from facial paralysis, has practical ly recovered and has left town. It is supposed for Reno, Nev. Mr. Jack man for some time took X-ray treat ment of Dr. Blakeslee. Charles Wall, of M. A. leader's un dertaking parlors, Is in Helix today in connection with the funeral of Mrs. Olive J. Myrick, who was buried at 11 this morning from the Chris tian church of that place. J. M. Spence, the well known so licitor, Is now in the employ of the Oregon Dally Journal, in the sub scription department. He is at pres ent at work in this city, but will cover Eastern Oregon, in the interest of that paper. J. D. Matheson, foreman of the me chanical department of the O. R. & N. at La Grande, was In the city last evening, on a brief visit, having come over on the delayed train yesterduy afternoon. Stranger Who Was Taken In Custody Vt Echo. Lust e'.er.lng Deputy Sheriff C. P. Duvls left for Salem, having in ch.trge Frederick Jones, the Insane man who was brought here from Echo several days ago. Jones was a transient laborer 'and arrived in Echo about a week ago. and immediately showed signs of in sanity. On being brought here he was examined before County Jude Bean and declared InRane. But as his misfortune was apparently caus ed largely by too much drinking, he was held in the county Jail for 'sev eral days by Sheriff Taylor, In the hope that he would Improve. There being no change In his mental condi tion, It was decided yesterday to send him to the asylum. Crowds at Christian Church. One of the largest midweek audi ences ever. assembled at the church heard Evangelist Doriis last night on "Holy Ghost Baptism." Mr. Dorrls proved that the Holy Ghoul never did fall on anybody to ' convert him and showed that - we did not have such baptism now; that the Idea of a "Modern Pentecost" was absurd, and only advocated by those Ignorant of the Scriptures. The sermon was a powerful array of Scriptural facts, and five more were added to the church. Mr. Dorrls will preach to night on the "New Birth; or Ye Must Be Born Again." Good singing, R. A.
