"ft PAGE SIX. DAILY EAST OREGONIAN. PENDLETON, OREGON, MONDAY, NOVEMBER SI, EIGHT PAGBj. THE FISH TRADE WORKS 10 WHS eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" '4 maw WORLD'S SALMON SUPPLY FROM PACIFIC COAST. Since the Industry Was Started on the Pacific Coast In IMa, of 55,000,000 Cases of Salmon Valued at 222, 00,000 Have Been Marketed For- An Old Medicine Appears in a New Guise. ! ... i i: f ! ty-rive Per Cent of the Entire Pack U Sold In the United States Salmon Commit Suicide When Four Years Old if Not Killed Before Reaching That Age. Nearly all of the world's supply of uuincu mimon is packed on the Pa cific coast, and since the business was organised In a methodical manner In lss about 55.000,000 cases, worth about $220,000,000. have been packed and sold on the market. More than IS, 000,000 cases have been packed on the Columbia river, 1,000,000 cases In Alaska, 10,000,000 cases In British Columbia and 5. 00,000 on Puget Sound. For the first few years the Sacramento river had a monopoly of the business. Then It began In a small way on the Colum bia. In 1876 the first canneries were built In British Columbia; two years later, In Alaska, and in 1891 two Frenchmen, Dr. Monod and M. Oofroy, went to Belllngham and start ed a little cannery the first on Pu get Sound. It failed the first year, ays William E. Curtis in the Phila delphia Press. Mr. Onfroy saw that the money was Is the fish and not In the packing, ao he hustled around and secured options upon all the best locations for traps. Any man can locate a fish trap anywhere on the shore by following the same rules that regulate mining and homestead claims, and he very soon took up all the best locations, and, having them as assets, organized new company. The next year he THERE IS WO LOVCBR DANGER OF DOING MORE HARM THAN GOOD. Vlnol Substituted lor Cu4 Liver Oil a Wonderf ul liupror-.ent. Mr. Brock, of the Brouk McCo mas Co., whose name is so closely as soclated with Vlnol, the wonderful discovery, Is by this time becoming used to answering questions. Yes terday, In answer to a reporter, he said: "People are not making an many Inquiries of me as they did. am now having my Innings, and you may be sure I am improving them by asking questions. This talk of the difficulty of introducing a new dis covery Is one of your newspaper fel low's yarns. Let the discovery be all right, and it goes right on and Intro duces Itself. All you need to do Is to give It a little shove and make li stand out before the public. It will do the rest. Yes, I did have to an swer a great many questions for i few days I will admit that; and, of course, I am not entirely through yet. But Vinol's friends are talking for it almost as well as it talks for Itself, and good news, as well as news of that which will do good, get around pretty fast, "You see it was not a very difficult thing to explain. Everybody grasped the idea in a minute, when I told them that the real value of cod liver oil existed In certain active principles always found in the liver of the live cod. It. was not very hard work for any one to believe that these same principles could be obtained by a spe sary to have them connected with the disagreeable and vlle-smelllng grease that formerly was a part of the remedy which they had known as cod liver oil. Well, that Is about all I had to fell them. It is not very hard work for even a child to compre hend that given a certain extract that contains valuable medicinal princi ples, that Just the right amount can be administered, and even a child could mix this same extract In the t'eilclous table wine which we are using, and which, so prepared, goes under the name of. Vinol. "Yes, Indeed, any number of people have already found out the value of Vtnol, Lots of them are coming to me every day and tolling me that they knew It was necessary tot them to take cod liver oil, but they could not do it. They are now telling me of the good tncy are deriving from Vln ol. and I am surprised myself at the, rapid way such benefits show them selves. This is where I nW asking my questions and collecting a nice lit tle batch of information In regard to the good that is being done in this city to people we all know. Will I publish any of it? Oh, I do not think I will. Not for the present at least, and of course I never would without the full permission of the people who tell me their stories. Many of them say more than they would like to see In print, they are so enthusiastic on the subject. Yet. perhaps, I will in a few dayst be able to give you the names of a few of the best known people in the city, who are" warm ad vocates of Vlnol, and doing more in a minute to gain new converts for It than I could In a week, consolidated with the Pacific Steam I clal process, without its being neces. miming company at Ban f ranclsco, which was working in Alaska, and they called the new concern the Pa cific Packing & Navigation company. Floated on Water. It was one of the biggest corpora tions ever floated on water, with V 00,004 of stock and 15,000,000' g( bonds, which were sold for cash in the open market to a confiding pub lie, and more than paid the entire cost f the plant and the promotion. It was soon developed, however, that the business could not even pay the Inter-, est on he bonds, and there was noth ing to (Jo but to 'go into court and ap point a receiver, whB has peen ping (he company since. This . I compuny tuts an immense amount of property, however, includ ing 19 canneries in Alaska and on Puget Sound, 40 fish traps, which practically monopolize the Puget Bound, fisheries and as many more in 'Alaska, with a big fleet of steamers, schooners, scows, tugs and other flat boats and fishing things. 1 Not only In Puget Sound, however, but all along the coast wrecks are trewn and millions of dollars of In nocent money have been sunk In en terprises tt lh6 wildest description ever tnw promoters and speculators got hold of the business. The ease with which the raw ma terial can be obtained and the steady and increasing demand tor the fin ished product offered an Irresistible temptnllon to speculators and adven turers to engage in the salmon pack ing business. The public went wild over their schemes and fought each other for the opportunity of investing their money In water. Conducted up on a rational and conservative basis there Is no better business, for the fish and the market are both certain and the demand never ceases. Fish Commit Suicide. Although every salmon commits suicide when he is 4 years old, if he is not captured by the trappers before his self-destruotlon, each female fish leaves a million or more eggs and a large proportion of them are hatched Into healthy "fry" by artificial care, " This business has been Intrusted to competent scientific men in all the Pacific states, and they plant the riv ers annually Vwith billions of young fish that go out to sea before they celebrate their first birthday and re turn again to spawn and die when they are 4 years old. The United States government also plants mil lions every year and exercises a gen eral supervision over the business, which is growing annually. Where the Pack is Sold. Of all the salmon packed on the pacific coast about 45 per cent is sold and consumed In the United States, 40 per cent In Europe and 15 per cent in the rest of the world. The English people are the largest consumers In proportion to population, and will ab sorb about 1,300,000 cases every year. All of the British Columbia catch Is sold in London except about 150, 00 cases, which are consumed in Canada. Between 400,000 and 600, 00 cases are shipped to London by sea from San Francisco. The English market demands the best quality. The cheaper qualities are sent. to China, Japan and India, about 100,000 oases to each country under ordinary cir cumstances; about 50,000 go to Aus tralia, 50,000 to Africa and 50,000 to South and Central America. tat v 4 jsvrr&zr s Mil viikh.
