R. ,& N. yards at Wallula, 300 at Umatilla and BOO In Portland and ad jacent sidetracks, every freight crew on the road working more thnn full time, engines going night nnd day, four nnd five extra trains a day each way, and every car on the system In use. Is part of the story of the rush of business on the O. R, & N. system. Never In the history of the road has business been so good as It Is now, nnd never was the rolling stock and motive power taxed as It Is now to handle the Increasing traffic. Most of the traffic Increase Is In the shipment of wheat to the East, and the resumption of the large lum ber mills has also added to the volume. It Is said by trainmen on The Dal-les-Umntllla division, that thero Is senrcely a sidetrack on the division at which trains can pass for the load ed cars standing on the tracks. The main yards at Umatilla are filled full of cars and the system Is alive with trains from end to end. Yesterday five extra trains passed up the road eastward, and a like number passes both ways every day. The engine men take but a few hours' rest at the terminal stations when they are called out for another trip. The engines are kept moving with the least possible delay for re pairs, and In the rush the engine crews are run In "chain gang," as It Is called, that Is, they have no regu lar engine, but take out any engine that can go for the trip. Five engine men have been hired and three promoted at La Grande In a short time, and more must bo had from some source soon, If the rush continues. Helper engines at Pleas nut Valley and Telocnset have been supplied with two crews each, and nn additional helper has been added to Kamola making four there now. He has not every year raised a larger acreage than any other farmer In the county, but undoubtedly has raised more potatoes during the past 20 years, during which time ho has re sided here, thnn any other farmer. Last year ho raised 100 acres and marketed over 4000 sacks, the aver age being over 80 bushels to tho acre. This year lie raised 10 acres, minus 12 acres that met with exas perating bad luck. A year ago last spring he procured from the East four barrels of Salzer's Six-Weeks potatoes, which cost him JG per barrel. The product of these costly seed potatoes he planted last spring on 12 acres of ground, nnd the crop was doing finely when a drove of cattle broke Into the field after the tubers were well advanced, and practlcnlly ruined the entire crop.
