CONTEST
CATHOLIC WOMEN'S SOCIETY
MEETING IN ST. PAUL.
Benevolent Association of the Catho.
lie Church of the United States,
Governed Exclusively by Women,
Holding a Spirited Convention
Contest for Presidency Promises to
Be Hot Archbishop Ireland Deliver
an Address.
St. Paul, Minn., July 19. Tho La
dles' Catholic Benovolent Association,
a fraternal Insurance society with a
large membership, and which .enjoys
the distinction of being managed en
tirely by women, began Its triennial
convention in St. Paul today. Previ
ous to the opening of the business
sessions the delegates nttended high
muss at the cathedral.
An Interesting feature of this part
of the program was tho Joint partici
pation of Archbishop Ireland and
Bishop McQuntd of Rochester, It be
ing tho first time that the two prel
ates have appeared together in public
since tho memorable controversy of
several years ago growing out of
Bishop McQuald's criticism of the St.
Paul prolate for tho lattor's political
utterances.
At tho exercises In the cathedral
this morning Archbishop Ireland
preached tho sermon and Bishop Mc
Quald took part In his capacity as su
premo spiritual adviser of tho ladles'
Catholic Denovolent Association.
The convention was regularly open
ed In tho People's church this after
noon with 4ho president of tho asso
ciation, Mrs. E. D." McQowan of Buf
falo, presiding. Addresses wore made
by Archbishop Ireland, Governor Van
Sant and Mayor Smith. Following the
formal opening the convention went
Into session behind closed doors for
tho consideration of business connect
ed with tho affairs of the association.
A spirited and almost acrimonious
contest has developed for tho presi
dency of tho organization. Mrs. Mc
Gowan, the Incumbent, has announced
her candidacy for re-election and Is
opposed by n large element who favor
tho candidacy of Mrs. Mary E. Costel
lo of Brooklyn. Mrs. McGowan has
come In for considerable criticism In
connection with her efforts to hold
on to tho office of president.
In tho last cnvontlon of tho order,
held nt Detroit three years ago, Mrs.
McGowan defeated Mrs. Popp of Pitts
burg, by 200 votes. In accepting the
ofllco she declared to tho delegates
present that she would never again
allow her namo to bo presented for
re-election.
