Benevolent Association of the Catho. lie Church of the United States, Governed Exclusively by Women, Holding a Spirited Convention Contest for Presidency Promises to Be Hot Archbishop Ireland Deliver an Address. St. Paul, Minn., July 19. Tho La dles' Catholic Benovolent Association, a fraternal Insurance society with a large membership, and which .enjoys the distinction of being managed en tirely by women, began Its triennial convention in St. Paul today. Previ ous to the opening of the business sessions the delegates nttended high muss at the cathedral. An Interesting feature of this part of the program was tho Joint partici pation of Archbishop Ireland and Bishop McQuntd of Rochester, It be ing tho first time that the two prel ates have appeared together in public since tho memorable controversy of several years ago growing out of Bishop McQuald's criticism of the St. Paul prolate for tho lattor's political utterances. At tho exercises In the cathedral this morning Archbishop Ireland preached tho sermon and Bishop Mc Quald took part In his capacity as su premo spiritual adviser of tho ladles' Catholic Denovolent Association. The convention was regularly open ed In tho People's church this after noon with 4ho president of tho asso ciation, Mrs. E. D." McQowan of Buf falo, presiding. Addresses wore made by Archbishop Ireland, Governor Van Sant and Mayor Smith. Following the formal opening the convention went Into session behind closed doors for tho consideration of business connect ed with tho affairs of the association. A spirited and almost acrimonious contest has developed for tho presi dency of tho organization. Mrs. Mc Gowan, the Incumbent, has announced her candidacy for re-election and Is opposed by n large element who favor tho candidacy of Mrs. Mary E. Costel lo of Brooklyn. Mrs. McGowan has come In for considerable criticism In connection with her efforts to hold on to tho office of president. In tho last cnvontlon of tho order, held nt Detroit three years ago, Mrs. McGowan defeated Mrs. Popp of Pitts burg, by 200 votes. Talks with th.c delegates already ar rived In the city indicate that the entire ticket will probably be named by acclamation, with tho .exception of railroad commissioner, tor which place there are soveral aspirants. For South Dakota Tennis, Sioux Falls, S. D., July 19. Tho second- annual tournament of tho South Dakota State Tennis Associa tion, which began hero today, prom ises to be a highly successful ovent. A. N. Hoffman of Pavkston, tho pres ent state champion, Is on hand to be fond his title. Exalted Ruler August Herrmann of Cincinnati Lodge No. 6, mado the opening address of welcome. Ho was followed by Mayor Julius Flolschman, who welcomed the Elks to Cincinnati. Governor Myrou T. Horrlck welcomed tho visitors in bchnlf of tho state of Ohio. .Joseph T. Fanning of Indian apolis, grand exalted ruler, responded. In tho course of his remarks Mr. Fanning stated that tho progress of the Elks In tho last year hnd novor been equaled In tho history of tho or ganization. This progress, ho ex plained, had manifested Itself not only numerically but Internally, In tho development nnd perfection of those Ideals for which the organization stands.
