This Instnnco recalls to the minds of the old settlers of Monument the mysterious disappearance of a cattle buyer, who suddenly disappeared from that country about 22 years ago. Long Creek Light. Tuberculosis In Milk Herds. Pure Food Inspector McPherson Is nftor the dairymen of the state, nnd ho proposes to sec to it that no milk Is sold to consumers or butter mudo from the milk from cows affected with tuberculosis or other dlsenso. A number of cows, so It Is alleged, are affected with disease which makes the milk unwholesome and Mr. McPherson Is determined that the sale of milk and butter from such animals shall stop. After the cows In and around Boise have been In spected he will make a tour of tho state and make a test of every dairy In the state. Considerable) complaint hns been made of late concerning the milk sold In Boise and tho Inspector Is determined to see that nothing is sold but what comes within thu pro visions of tho stato pure food law. Boise Capital News. Potatoes Resemble Nuggets. Potatoes are literally worth their weight In gold these days, each one being almost as valuablo as a good sized Klondike gold nugget. Tho rea son for the sudden advance Is the scarcity among tho farmers. The Falk Mercantile Company shipped In a car load from Baker City this week which they sold out In ton lots at f 1.50 per 100, and at $1.75 in smaller lots. They are retailing to thu consumer at $2 per 100 pounds. Boise Statesman. BUSINESS CARDS, SOCIETIES PROFESSIONS AND TRADES PHYSICIANS. Dlt. W. G. COLE, OFFICE IV jnnn bnlldlng. Thu Local Option press committee Iiub Issued tho following reply to the circular qt the Liquor Dealers' Asso ciation: "How ingeniously the liquor dealers and all their paid allies continue to evade the real Issue before the peo. pie. Thoy dare not meet the question squarely, "But they cannot deceive the people by their subterfuges. We can always trust the Intelligence of the average American. The liquor dealers make us think of the country youth who, on his first visit to the city was frightened and ran away from a stuffed bear. Their prohibition at this time Is a stuffed hear. "It seems to us contemptible for men of the pretensions of tho liquor dealers to attempt to prejudice the people against a principle so dear to every American citizen the right of the majority to rule. "Professing faith In personal liber ty as an Inherent right, and at the same time exhort the people to tram ple It under their feet. Who says that a vote for local option means GO per cent increase in taxes, and 33 per cent decrease in property values? Such an assertion would be amusing if the situation did not mako It seri ous. Facts are stubborn things and they prove the contrary as shown in yesterday's article. "The United States consus shows that the adoption of local option stimulates the growth of a stato or city and promotes prosperity. From 1890 to 1900 Kansas Increased in population ten times as fast as Ne braska under high .license; and North Dakota under prohibition, more than four times as fast as South Dakota. "In 1887 Atlanta, Georgia, adopted local option and during the year fol lowing enjoyed the greatest prosperi ty in its history. Stores vacated by saloons were promptly taken up by other lines of trade; many new busi ness blocks and factories were erect ed and trade In every branch Increas ed greatly. But we again remind the voter that if local option carries as It will of course, for Americans be lieve in majority rule it will not necessarily mean prohibition, or the closing of saloons. "Before that can take place, local option must carry, and then 10 per cent of the voters must petition for a special election, after that the peo ple will have the privilege of voting for or against tho saloons. Is It American to light against giving the majority an opportunity to choose what thoy want? LOCAL, OPTION PRESS COM. Startling Evidence. Fresh tostlraony iu great quantity Is constantly coming In, declaring Dr. Knights New Discovery for Con sumption Coughs and Colds to be un equaled. A recent expression from T. J.
