The past week has not boon al
together favorablo for tho growing
crops; tho days wero warmer than
usual, but the nights wero cool and
several frosts occurred, but tho dam
ago dono by them was slight and con
fined principally to tender vegetables,
such as beans, tomatoes, etc.
Some fruit, howover, was killed in
tho Orando Hondo valloy and n fow
other localities east of tho Cascado
mountains. Tho rains early Tuesday
morning occurred after tho following
reports wero mado. Thoy wero not
only timely, but well distributed, and
glvo promise of continuing for an
other day or two. In which caso thoy
will bo sufficient for all needs and
greatly stimulate tho growth of lato
crops.
Late wheat Is coming up to poor
stands, and corn, potatoes and gar
dens are growing slowly. Forage
crops, except timothy, nro doing well,
and tho first crop of alfalfa is being
harvested with satisfactory yields.
Stock everywhere is In excellent con
dition. Fall wheat, barley and ryo are
heading nicely, and these crops aro
generally in a very promising condi
tion, notwithstanding that some low
land wheat In Umatilla county was
badly damaged by freezing weather
earlier In tho Season. Hops nro grow
ing nicely and the hop men havo now
caught up with their work so that the
yards generally aro well cultivated.
Strawberries aro ripe, and homo
grown berries will bo plentiful In tho
markets during tho week. Apples
havo set well. Prunes will be light,
but peaches, pears nnd cherries aro
turning out better than oxpected
earlier in tho season.
Columbia River Valley.
Hosier, Wasco county, J. M. Car
roll Weather warm; all crops doing
nicely; cherries fell ofT badly; grain,
pasturage and gardens good; lambing
all dono.
Wasco, Sherman county, W. Q.
Morohouse Volunteer and fall wheat
beginning to head; all crops growing
rapidly.
Condon, Qllllam county, F. B. Ste
vens FIno growing weather; grass
has mado a better growth than for
years; grain growing finely; light
frost Monday and Tuesday nights did
not hurt fruit; sheep aro now going
to their summer ranges In the moun
tains. Lexington, Morrow county, E. It.
Beach Frost cut down many of tho
more advanced potatoes; slnco then
weather warm and growth rapid; the
pruno crop will bo almost nothing;
so far as fruit has existed It Is doing
well; summer fallowing about com
pleted; grain will soon bo matured.
