Sam White, of Baker City, chair man of the democratic state central committee, who managed the cam paign two years ago which elected George E. Chamberlain governor, was In the city a few moments last evening on his way home from Port land. "I am astonished to note the growth of Pendleton," remarked .Mr. White, as he surveyed the towering Bowman building from tne u. it. a N. platform. "I remember 1" years ago mat there was scarcely a building from Moi cinPt hrliicp north to the Co lumbia river, and now I see almost a million dollars' worth of elegant ih nf the river, where the boys used to be afraid to go after darfl, because or tne imagiueu imnk" around the old cemetery. It Is marvelous to think of the growth," The conversation naturally min ed to politics. "I think the democratic convenuuu did exactly the proper thing In de clining to Instruct for Hearst." said ' Not an ordinary article, but something extraordinary Is Hill's Pure California Olive Oil For medicinal use as well ais for salads and table use. Spokesman-Review. Power Company Files Mortgage. For the purpose of securing money to be used in the construction of the Washington & Oregon lwer Com pany's electrical power plant and pay for property acquired and to be ac quired and for other corporate pur poses of the company, there was filed in the county auditor's office to day a mortgage from the company to the Baker Uian & Investment Co. The mortgage recites that the com pany Is empowered to Issue notes not to exceed the sum of $250,000 for the purposes above enumerated, to date from April 1, 1904. and be due and payable April 1. 1905. The privilege Is reserved to pay the notes any time after September 1. 1904. The mortgage covers all the real es tate owned by the company In Ore gon and Washington, and takes In all the personal property. Including the water rights, rights of way, machin ery and electrical and water plants. The Instrument Is a voluminous document, being composed of 26 closely typewritten pages of the reg ular legal rorm of paper. It contains 1.500 words and the recording fee amounted to $11.50. Walla Walla Statesman. Snake River Road. The much talked of railroad down the Snake river from Huntington to I. ewlston Is once more one of the leading topics of conversations, and It now seems that It will really be built and that work will begin soon. Engineer I'tter of Weiser. is in charge of the survey and has two parties in the field resetting grade stakes, etc. There are about 15 men now in the field. Within two or three weeks Engi neer Utter expects to have about five surveying parties along the en tire route from Huntington to Lewis ton, according to the Weiser Signal. II. . I The line followed is about the i same as the one followed by the old Northwestern company, as it Is I thought the new company has se 1 cured control of the old right of way. 'Baker City Herald. Mr. White. "It is undemocratic to tie a man's hands. It is not one of the Ideals of the party to put gag rule and gag law Into execution. 'Every democratic delegate should be 1 free to act for the best Interest of I the party. "With aggressive work this year, there Is every hope for the demo crats of Oregon The utter failure of the republican legislature to pass a flat salary law: the refusal of the reuubllcan convention to adopt the direct primary amendment and the almost criminal delay ot tne repumi i cans In congress in relieving Eastern .Oregon by building the ship canal in 1 the lifetime of the present genera tion, all make democratic hopes brighter. I -The adminlsttatlon of Governor i Chamberlain pleases the people. If .he had a democratic legislature to work with him in ills high ideals of 'state government, taxes woulu be re duced in Oregon, the appropriations ' would be cut down within the limits of strict economy and the people would feel the results of such an ail 'ministration In dollars and cents." $100 Reward, $100.
