Wade has returned from a visit to Portland, where he went to attend the state democratic conven tion as a delegate. J. F. Robinson, the proprietor of the Domestic Laundry, left yester day afternoon for Portland on a short business visit. William Henry, a prominent resi dent and land owner of Athena, re turned home this morning after a short business visit here. J. J. The attorneys for James Summons and John Lynch, under death sentence for the mur der of Saloonkeeper Barrat, this afternoon notified the state's attor ney that he will ask for a stay of execution for Nledermeler, who con fessed to having killed Garrat after the others were convicted. J. H. Alexander, special agent of the Ia Grande land district, left to day for Heppner, where he goes to attend to land office business. Mr Alexander has been In the city for the nast two days, hearing final proofs of homestead claims, the land office rules now requiring the special agent to be present at the time of final proof is made before any official. Heretofore county clerks, Judges and notaries deslgnat ed by the land offlce couiu hear and receive the final proof papers, at any time, but now In order that the final papers may be unquestioned by the department, it Is necessary for a special agent to be present at the hearing.
