since the war opened, though they

There was an awful mix-up at the
Alia street ball grounds yesterday,
when the clerks from the Boston
store and the employes of the O. R.
& N. came together to decide the
baseball supremacy of the two call
ings. There were no fatalities except
to the &clenco and art of baseball,
and all of the Injured will recover.
The game was wnat might bo call-
en melange, imu u ciiuuui uu
scribed. It consisted of a series of
head-cud collisions resulting In
broken flanges, derailed cars, Hat
wheels, exhausted air brakes, bent
parallels, hot boxes and choked
stacks on the one hand, and large
discounts, damaged goods and loss
of Insurance on the other.
The game opened quite auspicious
ly. All of the boys had nice uni
forms and lots ot confidence. It
closed about tho sixth Inning with
a score of 21 to S in favor of tho
car shovers, becauso the semaphore
arm of the umpire had given out,
waving the danger signal to the bat
ters, when the pitcher turned his
special loose on the line. The bas'e
runners ran without order, signals or
schedule, and special excursions
were the order of the day.
During the middle of the game a
couple of engines filled their tanks
too full and ran wild, causing a sus
pension of the exercises, while they
weru caught by the fans and side'
tracked. Both were from foreign
roads, however, and had nothing to
do with the regular program.
If it were possible to describe the
game It would bo done, but tho Eng'
lish language Is Incapable of detail
lug all of the fine points of the piay.
lng. Besides, It might hurt somo of
the tender feelings of the players
most of whom are using arnica this
morning. It was very Interesting to
the large audience, however.
The next attempt will b ebetween
the hack and draymen, as the aggres
sors, and the O. R. & N. employes
as the respondents, If they are able
to respond before the close of the
season, The draymen demand satis
faction and recompense in the shape
of an oyster supper and various and
sundry cold bottles, Olympia prefer
red, and If there Is enough left in
the hospital fund atter a week or so.
it Is possible that the challenge will
he accepted.

Methodists Want to Dance.
Tlie more liberal elements among
the Now York Methodists have for
somo time been agitating tho propo
sition to raise the ban placed by the
book of discipline on dancing, card
playing and tho visiting of theaters.
They have long recognized that the
Puritanical strictness of that prohib
itory rule Is no longer In harmony
with the advanced spirit of tolerance
pervading all Christian churches.
All previous efforts to bring about a
modification of that rule were ren
dered futile by the opposition of tho
orthodox elements. Tho agitation
has been continued, howover, and It
Is believed, that at the conference
to he held hero this month, strong
pressure will be brought to bear, to
have the absolute prohibition chang
ed to a suggestion, enumerating
dancing, card-playing and theatergo

to be nvoided by the faithful. The
principal reason urged against tho
prohibitive rule Is that It cannot

A charming love story is Inter
woven through the play in which
our game keeper, of course, takes
the principal role. His enemies set
snares tor him, and even accuse him
of murder, nut ho outwits them all

An interesting feature of the per

which he knows so well how to
sing, and which are Interspersed
throughout the different acts. The
scenery used In the production is
all carried by tho company, and the
Illuminated chapel - scene in the last
act Is s.'.iil to be one of the moat
beautiful stage scenes over pre
