ROHDE. Maker ABE OF IRRIGATION REAWAKENING OF THE INDUSTRIAL ARTS England In Egypt and India, France In the Sahara and America on the Deserts of Arizona and New Mexico Are Performing Matchless Feats In Reclamation. There Is no one thing that protends future greatness of the present civil ization moro than the efforts now be ing put forth In all the arid regions of the earth to make the desort and. waste places habitable and product ive. Archaeologists tell us that where they have found mnn's strugglo for existence nardest, there they have found the highest types of civilization that are dead and gone. On the high plateaus of South America and the mesas of Mexico; in the desert where flows !'c N'':c, oa the bleached plains .of Arabia and where the sacred Ganges courses to the sea are found traces of feats of irrigating skill, broken works of art, ruined temples and shrines that equal and in some instances surpass the boasted skill oi modern engineering, art and architecture. Notably among these was the great canal ways taken from .o Euphrates and Tigris to make fruitful the desert plains of ancient Chaldea. These It wore that made it possible io have such flourishing cities ages ago as Nipur, Ninevah and Babylon. One of these canals was over 3E0 miles in length and when running through the open country between 300 and 400 feet in width and ten feet In depth. The other canal was very nearly as ions .aca largo aa thi.-, on. end the two of them watered something like z,bl)0,000 acres of lanu. Hut conquest depopulated Chaldea and floods wash ed away and sands covered up the handiwork of its ancient inhabitants. All this vast amount of arid land Is now to be reclaimed under the management of Sir 'William "Wilcox. He places the cost of reconstructing the canals at 21,000,000 or a little over $100,0uu,000. The British government is now working on the Sone"nroject In India which when completed will extend a distance of '370 miles and irrigate 500,000 acres of land. Besides this there have been constructed in India over 2,000 miles of canals which irri gate over 6,000,000 acres of land. The British in Africa Tiavu but recently completed two enormous dams to store the waters of the upper Nile, which will reclaim several millions qT acres of land of the Sahara desert. Australia Is also beginning to take steps to reclaim her arid plains, but unfortunately this country is not so well traversed with streams, nor is the rainfall sufficient at any season of the year In many localities to war rant building large reservoirs for stor age purposes, so that the Irrigation problem In that country will not be so easily solved as It is In many other parts of the world, but time and tne Ingenuity of man will find a way to somehow prop'e the Australian des erts and make them blossom like the rose. It is safe to say that, so far as America Is concerned, within the next 30 years the United States govern ment will have reclaimed at least 10,' 000,000 acVcs of Its arid lands. This means more than (10,000 new farms of 100 acres each. It also means the stimulating of the agricultural Inter ests of this country to a degree never before known, and the dawning of a greater prospentv for America than any nation on earth.
