THROCGH DESERT LAND ACT I PUBLIC DOMAIN DISAPPEARS. opposition to Repeal In the West I Comes From All Quarters East Must Brlno Pressure to Bear to Save Public Lands. waslunnton, D. C., Oct. C. (To me tuuor.j Tho strong and deter mined; opposition developed at the recent National Irrlcatlon Congress ft Ogden, to the yrvojui tepeal di some or our abused land laws In uicaies mat ir mere is to bo any changing or nn.cno.ing of there laws It will be done only through n thor ough understanding of their Iniqui tous features and an awakening of the people to a realization of the fact that under them Immense Quantities of valuable government property are passing into the hands of private cor porations and speculators .for a mere tithe of their. value to the nation. A resolution was introduced at the congress by George H. Maxwell, the executive chairman of the National Irrigation association the same reso union which was passed by the last Irans-.MIssIsslppI Congress, quoting the president's words In denuncia tlon of these laws and callinir unon the United Siates Congress for their repeal. , Congressmen from both Wyomlnx and Idaho vigorously opposed such i action and In a speech to the Irriga 1 lion Congress Representative Slon 1 dell of Wyoming strenuously defend i ed all the land laws, especially the Desert Land Law. wh.ch he stated had been of great benefit to Wyom- Ing. ' On the other hand congressmen I ot California and .Montana denounced i all three laws as having been the cause of enormous areas of public land passing fraudulently into pri- vate mvncrsmp, and Senator Gibson ot .Montana and .Mr. .Maxwell both , quoted lind Office figures to show I that unless something is done to pre vent the absorption of. these lands the great bulk of fie remaining dcsi- rable and arable public lands will, , In a very few years, have entirely ji.isappeared. Under a proper timber law the gov ernment income from timber sales would he far greater than at present and n any event the ubovo is a pre posterous reason to advance, because if these laws are left intact, and the absorption of the public domain un der them continues as at present, there will soon be no government land left for reclamation under the irri gation act. Repeal These Law.-. Now the proposition Is to report' these three laws. It will be necessa ry to have some additional legislation regarding the sale of timber, A strong point made by tho opponents of the repeal of these laws is that such action would cut off the contri I...., ... ...i.t..i. 1 lIIUUJ!i IU 111. 11 1 l.llll'll ---I'll, Milt Wl ' i . t tr .1... 1.. r ....1.1!,. is oerive uiruin me nine ui imhmii; lauds. Looking to the East. The strength to innure tho repeal oi these laws must come from the East. The fight in the Irrigation con gress shows tho opposition which can be expected In certain sections of the West and In order to secure the public domain from speculation and to keep It intact against tho time when It shall be needed by the set tier, eastern sentiment must liecomo aroused to the sltuatlur. Western opposition and eastern apathy are the stumbling blocks. The western men who look lor tno true development of their country along home-making lines ask the Hast tc come to their support on this ques tionto save the land for the actual settler Ouy K. .Mitchell. 1 LADIES' COATS, SUITS and SKIRTS j Tho season for buying fall and winter wearing apparel is lioro nntl wo are oiler- 3 ing rare bargains.
