As a result of this condition, the price in Unlou county promises to be unusually high, in or der that the millers may purchase all , the yield and thus save the freight ' , charges on Imported wheat. There Is at the head of the list of candidates a way to bring about good order, for the honor. The first matter to be maintain good morals, economize In considered by the head clerk, is the , the city affairs and Improve the pub mail facilities of the city at which ; lie service to the people or the city, his office is located. It is necessary j without entering into a bitter parti that this office be In close communi-i san campaign. 1 cation with the different circles of the order. It Is necessary that the office be so located that It may reach the member; time, in order to facilitate business and keep the local circles 'n touch with the head offices. The office of grand guardian was located in this city, with this very ob ject in view, and the location of this office here has proved to ' be a wise and judicious selection. The mem bers of the growing order throughout the country are in direct touch with the grand guardian here, as they eould be In no other city in the West. Pendloton has eight through mails each day, a number not enjojvd by any other city so conveniently locu ed to the bulk of the membership, on the entire Pacific Coast. There are tour mall trains on the main line of the O. R. & X., two on the Spokane branch and two on the W. & C. R. each day. At no other place on the coast could tho business of the office be conducted so conveniently, and with such satisfaction as In this city. If the office Is located here, it would facilitate the work of the grand guardian's office and the head clerk's office, as well, for much of the busi ness transacted must necessarily be handled through both offices, and tomld b attended to much more sat isfactorily and much more economic ally if both offices were in one city. Pendleton is centrally located, with reference to -the.- distribution of the membership. It Is located most happi ly with reference to mall facilities and from a business standpoint, or a standpoint of economy, It would an swer the pnrposo of the orle- n more advantage than auy other city that could be selected. The health of the community, the social and fraternal advantages, and all the various phases of the question are favorable. The people are main taining two circles of the order, both In a highly prosperous condition and both growing constantly. The growth of the order In this section of coun try Is highly encouraging and from Pendleton the entire membership of the organization could be in direct touch with the most important offices. 10 Senator Stewart, of Nevada, tells a new story of Mark Twaiu's appren ticeship. Soon after his marriage, he said, his wife stayed out until after mid night. When she came home he met her at the head of the stairs and de manded sternly whero sho had been. She told him it was none of his busi ness and hit him in the nose with her fist, he says. An Italian workincmaii has Invent ed a bullet and sword-proof clotl. which will not only make Its wearer invulnerable from bullets fired from a modern military rifle, but lie wil. not even feel the slightest shock. The invention lias been tested by a series or very Interesting experi ments In the military hospital. A dead body was dressed In a uni form made from the cloth, and an of ficer tried with all his might to pierce it with a verj sharp stiletto, but failed after having made several attempts. After this six shots were fired at the body, but all the bullets were caught and stopped by the cloth and not the smallest mark could be found on the body. TEACHING UNDER DIFFICULTIES. There Is a very young lady teacher down near Elk City. Oklahoma, who takes the palm for recognized pluck. Recently a few of her patrons became incensed over the punishment meted out to certain pupils dear to their hearts. A plot was laid among them to wipe the teacher off the landscape one morning. Accordingly they start ed for the school house, an aggres sive member of the party being far in the lead. He was met nt the door by a calm, determined young lady and the cold, unsympathetic stare of a shotgun. He fled preclelpately, meeting the other would-be wlpers out. who turned and fled with him, looking not backward until the vic torious girl on guard with her gun seemed to their sight a mere blur on the landscape.
