In nn address bcroro the board In Portland Monday night, gave some interest Ing facts concerning the progress or the work. Mr. Scott said in part; "Work upon the grounds is pro. grossing rapidly, it is the dutv or all who take an interest In the coming celebration and exposition to visit the grounds now, and as the work pro ceeds, and witness the development and transformation. The work ot preparation Is In the hands or Mr Oscar Hubcr. a capable superintend ent. About 120 men and 50 horses,' with necessary implements, are at 1 present employed. Within three I months the grounds will bo ready for I buildings. We are followlug, sub- . stantlally, the plans outlined by Mr, Ulmstead, but with certain modifica tions, conducive, as we think, to economic results. "The stnte commission has been organized and Is now fully ready for co-operation with tho directors of this association. As our annual election was so near, we have been wnitinir till after this event for the close con sultation with the co-oticratlve com mittee of six appointed by the stnte commission in pursuance of the act of the legislature, which the success ful prosecution or this joint mulct taking will require. "Of the fund subscribed in Port land, $320,000 will be available for the purposes of the exposition. We hope to Increase this amount nnd have engaged agents to canvass for additional subscriptions. Available for the Fair. Of the sum appropriated by the state, $400,000 will bo available for tho fair, making a total of $720,000. Tills total is exclusive of the sum or $50,000 from the state appropriation This who week we will make one of Special Bargains for all wish to outfit for the Fourth of July Celebration.
