The socialist democratic party of Germany, which la evpertett to show Increased strength in Uio coming; elections. Is the only German party which has grown without a pause for tho past 20 years, o. Eltxuacher gives some facts worth bearing- ln mind when tho new returns como In. The soclnllst democratic voto In the past six general elections has risen In this fashion: 1SS1 312,000 1SSI '. 550,000 US7 70.3.10(1 1S0O 1,427,000 1S9S l,7oti,700 1S3S 2,107,076 The socialists polled ('..12 per cent of the total voto In 18S1 anil 27.1S per cent In 1S9S. They cast 50 per cent more votes at tho last election than any other party, and yet, owing to tho unfair apportionment, their 2,107,100 voters have only 57 seats In tho retell stag against 102 seats for the 1.455,100 voters of tho next most numerous party, the center. The present socialist democratic platform Is not what we should enll socialist, hut rather advanced liberal. Its demands are: 1. One vote for every man and wo man, a holiday on election day; pay ment of members of parliament. 2. Responsibility of tho govern ment to parliament; local self-government and tne referendum, 3. Substitution of militia system for great stnndlng army. 4. Freedom of speech and tho press. 5. Legai equality of tho soxes. C. Disestablishment of the churches. 7. Free non-sectarian schools, with compulsory attendance. S, Gratultious legal proceedings. 9. Free medical nttendanco and burials. 10. Progressive income and Inheri tance taxes. The social democrats are distin guished by the high personal integri ty of their leaders. According to -Mr. Eltzbachor, they form "by far the best led, best managed and the most homogeneous party in Germany," In deed, "the only party which, from an English point of view, can be consul ered a party." It l. expected thai at Iho next election an immense number of bankers, merchants and professional men of liberal views will voto tho so cialist democratic ticket. As candl' dates for the reichstag must havo an ausoluto majority of all votes cast before there can bo a choice, it was necessary to vote again In 4S per cent of the constituencies at the last elec tion. Heretofore nil the other par ties havo been accustomed to com bine against the social democrats in these second polls. This will not happen again, and there seems reason to expect that in the next relclistng there will be at least a hundred so cial democratic members, elected by 3,000,000 voters, I .iAND CARRIAGES.
