Halley before the recent meet Ine of the Progress Club, should bo A n text and a creed for the city of Pen $ -illeton, until the population is in creased to 20,000 souls. The flood of Immigration that is now rushing westward passes through this city to oilier points, which have introduced themselves to the home xeeker in the East. Of the 20,000 homeseeker tickets -written by the Hnrriman Hues since the cheap rate went Into effect, how many have named Pendleton as the objective point? Walla Walla, Spo Jiane, La Orande, Baker City and other towns of the Inland Empire have thoroughly advertised their ro sources in the East, and have been rewarded by receiving parties of tourists which were attracted by the .special features of the locality. Thorp is no lack of natural advan tages In Umatilla county. There is no dearth of nttrnctlons and oppor- ! tunltles for Investment. There Is no reason why. one-fourth of the flood or tourists who have passed through 'this city within the past sixty days i' should pot have been entertained In 'this city nnd Introduced to the splen s5 -flirt resources of this county. ' " Every city of importance In Oregon ihns gathered the minutest details In regard to the business openings and resources, educational facilities and other statistics. Into attractive pam phlets and sent them whirling among the Eastern states. The result is that the names of these cities nrc on every tongue. They were made ob jective points for entire carloads of lujmeseekers, who had money to in--vest and who wore ready to settle In Oregon on the slightest Inducement, "Where this descriptive literature Is circulated free of charge, and kept in ' , (conspicuous places where it can bo .tend 'by tho greatest number of peo , 3le in the East, it seems that Pen ' dleton could afford to issue ono of tho I -most attractive pamphlets over sent ' out of Oregon. ' "Tho .world-famous wheat and wool r- ,-crops pf this county, tho manufacture . ed .articles which have introduced the , .clty-ito every, community In the East, unnd tho natural resources which an ' ' joal to investors, need only to ho I .-mentioned, to attract tho widest at J Uetitlon. ,.' - "How to secure hoineseekers and ihold them" should bo tho theme of -every public meeting held In Pontile- ton during tho noxt year. Tho first petition for a referendum tvote on tho portago road comes from Vale, Malheur comity. It only con 'tains 50 signatures anil tho secretary .of state will keep It as a souvenir ,for Eastern Oregon. The aiiununcoment in a Walla nvalla paer that sovoral freight 'teams had recently been loaded In that city, with supplies for Susan vlllo, a tributary to Pendleton's istream of trade should cause Pen . dleton business men to look to their laurels, The triumph won by the Scrlpps t7'uMcllao News Association in securing 7 ;n wireless telegraphic nows servico IL.40U the coming yacht race between ho . Reliance and Shamrock III., Is rorthy of .special notice. This asso- elation Is making rapid progress In Its field, which proves the constant growth of tho demand for the after noon paper. Tho school book trust Is shown to have Bent $40,000 into Missouri to in fluence legislation. Wherever It goes It breeds corruption. Its meth ods are always reprehensible, and it does not hesitate to resort to the use of money If It can find an opening for Influencing business In that manner, "BInger Hermann was removed from the Roseburg land office by President Grant In 1873, having serv ed but one month more than half his term of four years," says tho Eugene Guard. "Ho was speculating In public lands contrary to regulations. Thirty years afterward, In the year 1903, the present republican president turned him out of the general land office and that, too, for cause. And yet, Oregon republicans -were buncoed in to nominating him for congress. And lots of them will vote for him. It is a most curious thing, this hold of BInger Hermann on Oregon republi canism." This Is a campaign chorus from Mr. Hermann's own neighbor hood. CHIPS OF OLD BLOCK. Archibald Roosevelt's spotted young A gonauln. which has figured con splcuously since Its advent on the living floor of the president s private quarters, by means of the elevator, today dashed up Pennsylvania avenue with Archibald sitting astride of its back, a veritable picture in miniature of the president himself. The avenue was crowded with people on Sunday parade, when, tearing up tho avenue, came tho president's young son astride of tho pony and wearing a big rough riders' hat of white felt, n black sweater with bandB of red nt the wrist and neck, n pair of cordu roy trousers, tucked into yellow rid ing boots and a swirl and dash of the whip with every movement of the pony. Close behind him came the presi dent's footman, Black Charles, a negro of short stature, doubled up on a bi cycle and riding far beyond the speed limit on tho city streets. Every one stopped to watch the riders, ami young Roosovelt was perfectly aware of the sensation he was creating and smiled as ho went V Just a little later the people at the corner of Fifteenth street and Penn sylvania avenue were surprised to see a young girl of 10 or 12 years, wear ing a plain white sailor suit, dash along the street in a fearless manner on a horse and up to the curb before a drug store, when she alighted with the agility of a cat to the pavement and ran into tho store for soda water. TIiIb was Ethel Roosovelt. Behind her, and wholly unable to keep within proper distance to be of assistance should an accident befall her. was the president's footman. Ethel frequently rides down tho business streets of Washington, flying along like a great white bird, her yellow hair blowing about under her sailor hat and red youth and health In her cheeks. When these children first came to .tch White House they were shy In public, but now are as much at home In tho crowded thoroughfares, whore they are the center of attraction, as they were at Oyster Bay In their own back ynrd. Chicago Record-Herald. HUBBARD IN DENVER. The many local readers of Elbert Hubbard's Philistine: a journal of protest, which has appeared from' month to month ns an exclusive feat ure of the Post, will bo delighted to know that this celebrated writer and orator is coming to Denver. The Post readers have come to know and ad mire "Krn.EIbertus" through his scin tillating wit and humor, as set forth In his own inimitable maimer, and now they nro to have an opportunity of studying tho personal characteris tics of ono of the most talked of men in America. Mr. Hubbard Is to lecture nt tho Woman's Club Thursday ovenlng, .May 12. and tho subject he has select ed Is "Roycroft Ideals." Nobody Is so capablo of tulklng of tho Roycroft crs, their work and their Ideals as is Mr. Hubbard, as he created the Roy crofters, sot up the standard of their Ideals and mapped out the work thoy have to do. "Work is for tho workers," once said this leader of the Philistines to his flock, and he has seen to It that tho Idea was carried out nt East Aurora, Erie county. New York, where tho Roycroft shop Is located, and the work thoy have done has been of n To Look Well your blood must be pure to give your complexion that peculiar freshness which can only be obtained when your system is in good working order. WEONHDAV, quality to make East Aurora es famous ns was the celebrated shoulder -of Katlsha, which people come from afar to see. As a speaker "Pra Elbortus" Is said tn be as great or even a greater buci cess than he Is as a writer. Of his oratorical ability one of his critics has had this to say: "The man Is seen at his best on the lecture plat form." His printed words often seem flippant nnd needlessly ironical, but the countenance of Fra Elbertus shows only good cheer and kindness and his lecture made every hearer better." Denver Post. NAVAL WEAR AND TEAR. The wear and tear on battleships In times of peace seem to cost more than the victor's losses In time of war. The damage Inflicted on tho American, navy by the Spanish guns is less than that which It has suffered from Its own guns since the trenty of Paris. This is likely to dampen the growing enthusiasm for naval appropriations. "In time of peace prepare for war" becomes annoying when preparation Is more dangerous to life nnd property than warfare. The Tribune does not attempt to place tho blamo for the defects in construction which lead to tho burst ing of rifled cannon, the brenkdown of turrets, or 'bucking" of decks. There have been bad accidents on the Illinois, the Iowa nnd the .Maine with in a short time, and the Maine re cently returned from its first cruise with its deck plates bent In by the re coll of the guns. "Some one had blun dered." Naval writers have consid ered the development of naval sci ence a contest between armor and projectiles. They seem to have for gotten the clement of structural strength. The United States can not afford to drop behind In the development of n nnvy, but naval constructors must impiove their plans. Bridge builders allow for n strain greater than any that will be put on tho structure. Shipbuilders should allow an ample margin of safety. Chicago Tribune. AMORIS FABULAE. Ho was a beast, And she was a beast: Thpy loved and dwelt together. 'Twos a beastly life. But It was not hell Benst-llko all storms they weather. He was a beast. And she was a soul; Nay, she was an angel of God! The vulture fed on Promothen, She uttered no moan, but steadfast prayed Till they couched her beneath the sod. He was a soul, And she was a beast; A beast of the octopus-kind. She fastened her writhing arms about His being and drew the life-blood ont Then an angel stole his mind. He was a soul, and she was a soul; And they dw.elt In God's paradise. The skies were clear though the storm-wind swept. The rainbow shone through the tears they wept Thoy were foolish, and very wise.
