SMITH LIVESTOCK 1 CO., THINK THEM BEST. Think Much Money Can Be Made In Young Mutton and Also In Thor , oughbred Rams for Idaho and Mon tana Ranges. The J. E. Smith Livestock Compa ny ha sold to Pope Howard 1.B00 head of sheep to be shipped to Mir.' I ?c0,,a ,MV ir'- whero tl,ey will bo 1 full fed throughout tho summer for fall marketing In Chicago. It Is worth remembering that Popo & Howard aver that the S.000 mutton Iambs they bought of tho Smith Com . pany last fall and which were full ieu wirough tho winter, finest muttons that have , 1110 unicngo market this eastern uregon. grnue biiropsiures. But in spite of the par excellence of tho Shropshire grade when properly handled, the Smith people arc radical partisans of the Merino the Spanish and the De lano. They claim that the best mutton 1-l.i.v.ji for nsstc;a O.cson is a cross of fullblood Merino bucks on native grades which are partly Merino. U,;t their adherence for profit is staunch for the wool sheep, and in their opin ion the nearer that sheep Ir to being fullblooded Merino the bettor, as will be seen hereafter. Not merely do they believe in high grado Merino, but the shecpraiser who wishes to make the best of his opportunities which opportunities include climate and range principally In their opin ion had best work into the fullblood ed Merino as fast as possible. They take no stock whatever in the theory some hold that a cross is necessary to secure hardiness or any other de sirable quality, but hold that the nat ural adaptability of the animal to di-i-muaie aim 10 also perfectly as simiiate our native forage, makes the fullblooded animal to all intent and purposes an Indigeneous Ameri can sheep. In other words, that a few- generations of Americanization of the finest bpanish sheep as perfectly adapts that sheep to Western Amer- ca as It Is adapted to Spain. .1. E. Smith, the head of the com pany, noes not taue much stock in the concern so many sheep and other stocKmen express about "changing methods of sheep farming" being crowded on Umatilla county by the breaking up of the largo ranches and farms, and by other conditions. He admits that methods will be modi fled to a certain extent, but that they will not be radically changed. At tbe same time the Smith company is to a certain extent adapting the! methods to the changes which they tnemselves recognize. For Instance, they have already gone into the "mod ified" system somewhat, but believe its application will begin and end about at that point where they apply It now: the development of the mut ton capabilities of the yearly surplus, They consider that the country is now stocked to Its safe limit, and that opinion compels the conclusion that the surplus must go on the mar ket every year as mutton instead of being held and developed for wool as has hitherto been the system. In conformance with this theory the Smith company now raises root crops and hay more especially for tho de velopment of milk-producing quail ties in the breeding ewes and thus secure marketable lambs earlier than by dependence upon the natural range. The company now has 3,800 full blooded Merino ewes, of which num ber 2,000 have been bred to imported registered Delane and Spanish Meri no bucks. These breeding ewes will be fed before and after lambing with domestic hay and root crops as tho best method of developing the lambs both for tho outside market for breed Ing rams and for the outsldo mutton market as well. In this general way the Smith company adapts Its mctli ods to whatever changing conditions there may be, and does it as the best method of disposing or wo naiurui Increase at the least expense and greatest profit. As to wool, tbe Smith company be Ileves tbe very best animal Is tho fullblooded sheep .and not only that but that tbe fullblooded Is tho most profitable for tbe Wallowa country and for the Idaho and Montana mar kets. They have noticed tho tenueii cy for years In those districts to run to a coarse sueep, and mat luiiuum-j has resulted in a lanky, looso limbed and coarse, loose-fibred wool animal. Knw thnsR districts have begun to re alize their error and to breed for the develonment of wool. Furthermore, ihnfee districts mentioned have begun to buy their fine bucks In great num bers in Umatilla comity, which makes 1 ft nut nml inc reaslng market for fine sheep, wool sheep, raised here. Tbe Smith company standard for Eastern Oregon Is a sheep that will clip 10 pounds at a year old nnd weigh 100 pounds after shearing. Not onlv do they believe in nnd reach that standard, but claim that that same sheep leaves the largest and the best carcass for the mutton mar ket when It has reached the ngc to be discarded altogether for wool. The fullblood Delane and Spanish Merino is the sheep embodying those finalities. In their opinion, and their devotion to this ideal in their meiu pounds. The same animals nvcrago 13H poundB fleece ns yearlings. This company raises lambs from SO per cent of their fullblooded owes, nnd havo now, In the best of condition, 2,300 lambs from tho 2,900 fullblood ed ewes mentioned elsewhere. A lit tle later, when tho lambing season Is completed, tho company will havo 45,000 sheep on their two ranches, and now havo SO men employed tak ing caro of the Hocks. They begin shearing next Monday nnd will shear 25,000 sheep this sea son. It Is Just 29 years since J. K. Smith went Into the lmslness of rais ing sheep In this county, with a t.art ncr with whom to divide the profits 011 the flock of 200 sheep, nearly all of which had tho scab and with which they were Infested Tor two years.
