The general Idea as to tho physical appearance of a good moun tain reservoir site before the water Is Impounded Is probably far from correct. One pictures such a bnsln as a deep gorge with a narrow out let across which a dnm can bo thrown from wall to wall. The reservoir Bite wh'ch the engineer selects would not be recognizable as such to tho ordi nary eye. Many appar ently Ideal sites have such a grade or fall, that a dam, perhaps even 150 feet In height would bad; up water for only n short distance and form a lake of but small dimensions. Tho best sites, generally speaking, are those where the fall of the ground Is but very slight, per haps Imperceptible to the eye, tho Idea being to overflow as large an area as possible above tho dam. Such land being situated In the mountains. Is usually worthless for agricultural pur poses. A good reservoir alto must also have trlbutnry to it a wide catch ment area; the snow water and rain from a large tract of mountnln and forest land should flow into it. Sites on Every Stream. Since 18S8 the United States geo logical survey has been at work Inves tigating the reservoir sites of tho arid region. Ab almost every stream has a number of different storage sites, it requires careful Investigation to determine which Is tho most feasible and economical. When a determina tion lias been reached, tho govern ment Immediately withdraws the site and the catchment basin, which Is tho source of the water supply, from prl vate entry. In the mountains of Col orado alone, the geological survey has determined some CO of these sites San Carlos Dam. The San Carlos dam site on the Olla river In Arizona, for which an appro print Ion Is recommended by tho see retary of the Interior, Is a good exam pie of storage possibilities. The pro Pokru uam has a span of some ( feet, connecting tho lofty walls of tho river canyon at a height of 14 feet aobvo the stream. The San Carlos dam would form a lake covering 8000 acrea and capable of Irrigating 120,' 000 acres. This Is the snmo river whose waters thousands of years ago wero used lor the growing of crops on tno arid plains of Arizona. Hundreds of other storage basins leiger and smaller, nestle In the bos om of the Hocky mountains, fiom Montana to Mexico, each capable of supplying the life blood for many now nomes. Almost all the streams of tho West are subject to violent fluctuation, at one tlmo tremendous rivers, at others narrow ribbons of silver, and some' times even dry beds. The reservoir' Ing of these Hood waters would not only Insure bountiful crops for vast tracts of land now waste desert places and create homes for millions of American citizens, but would, In the very beginning, prevent the disastrous Hoods caused by the same waters which a short time following could bo used to such great advantage. Sheep In Poor Condition. Nat Webb and son, Paul, of Walla Walla arrlvered here Tuesday and will .remain some time looking after Mr. Webb's large sheep Interests In this county. He also has extensive sheep Interests In the Huntington country. His sheep there have suffer ed considerably from the cold and protracted feeding season and scarci ty of feed. Mr, Weeb says there Is less grass In the county than ever before at this season of the year since the settlement of the country. Throughout tho country generally sheep are gaunted from scarcity of feed and too long forage feeding. However the flocks are usually free from dlseabc, Heppner Times. Feed Teats. W. J. Townley, of Union, Oro., dem onstrated In a week's feeding experi ments that It would cost t2.'Ji to put 100 pounds gain on hogs by feeding a mixture of shorts, chopped wheat and bran In the proportion of 10, 7 and 3, respectively; $3.29 to put on 100 pound by feeding shorts and bran In a 2 to 1 proportion, and $3.05 tc put on 100 pounds by feeding chop ped wheat. The three tests wer made on two hogs each, and lasted only seven days, so aro not considered con clusive, but are very Interesting as Heppner Times. Tho Korean government Is consid ering the advisability of Introducing universal conscription.
