Coplen, Geologist, Describes Formation of Umatilla County, and Expects to find Artesian Flow at Echo Buttes. 7 Echo, Mar. 30, B. T. Coplen. OX' irwit un luilliuiiuu lui Uliuauiu h iuci who has been making extensive ex nminatlons of tho Columbia River basin for a number of years, nfter looking over tho situation here, says thore Is every Indication that artesian water can bo had along tho base of tho Echo Buttes; the formation here being basaltic can surrounded on all sides by an older formation of the tertian age Indlcntlng that the tor tlan formation bore Is underneath the basalt and that the contact between those formations carries tho sub-tor rnneau water. The apex of basaltic lornintlon Is found In the foothills of the Blue mountains and can he traced tho en tiro circuit of wbnt was formerly nn inland sen, being a llttlo higher along the foothills of tho Coeur d' Alono and Blue mountains, than the Cascades, This Indicates that the How of the basalt, filling tho Inland sea, was westward. The Buttes are folds In tho basalt extending north nnd south nl the base of which tho contact can be reached. This will give pressure from tho entire contact nnd. in ills opinion, can be reached nt no great depth. Tito Columbia River evidently flowed for a number of years under neath the basalt but in the course of time the basalt caved in closing the subterrnnlan channel In the Grand Coolie. Evidence Is plain that the inlnnd sea was much deeper and consequent ly tho contact Is much lower in the Big Bond than in this portion of tho country. As prenf of these facts he has gathered some specimens of the formation In the various localities. Tho specimens found here being con glomerate consisting of basaltic mat ter and older formation. These are evidence that the contact Is not dis tant. Mr. Coplen was with Prof. Storn berg under the direction of Prof, Cope of the Smithsonian Institute who made an examination of this country in 1S7C. He also gathered tluee tons of peclmeiiE, which constituted tho lar& est cabinet ever gathered of tho fos- II of this country. The cabinet was purchased by Marshal Fields and do nated to the Academy of Science of vjnicago. ECHO NEWS ITEMS. Butte. Walla stath or onto. CITY OF TOI.KDO, I.UCA8 COUNTY. Frank J.
