Some nice pictures for the walls would be acceptable, too. Holding for Better Prices. D. H. McCarty, of Tacoraa, has been in the county several days endeavor ing to buy for the Sound market, sheep, cattle and hogs ready for the shambles. As for hogs, he found that none were to be had at any price, be cause there are now in the county barely enough to supply the local mar kets. As for sheep and cattle he stat ed that the owners are holding on for better prices, hoping to get the prices of a year ago. Down From Wood Camps. G. W. Allen, one of the most ex tensive wood shippers of Kamela, was in the city yesterday evening, return ing home on this morning's train. Mr. Allen says the sdow is so soft at pres ent that wood hauling is practically stopped. There is yet three feet of snow at Kamela. Mr. Allen's daugh ter, Mabel, is attending school in this city. Casey's new mill site near Meacham, will begin as soon as the snow melts away sufficient to allow the excavation to be made. At present there are three feet of snow on the site. Work on the railroad spur will also begin soon, in order to allow the contractor to unload mater ial and supplies there. Inspecting Echo Land. Engineer F. E. Holm and Christine Nobles, of La Grande, passed down the O. R. & N. yesterday evening, on a brief visit to Echo, where they will look over the irrigation reservation, with a view of locating. Charles Tall of La Grande, also, is now at Echo, viewing the prospects. Improvements In the County. G, W. Hrown is in town from Mid dle Cold Springs canyon. He has been building an addition to Louis Hanson's residence. Mr. Hanson will soon put up a barn 52x48 feet. Mr. Brown says that J. G. Richardson is erecting a neat dwelling house on his farm in the Cold Springs Canyon. A large party of immigrants from Mlsouri arrived at Echo a few days ago, and at once advanced en masse on the irigation district to the southward. MB. Smith have arrived and will attend the funeral except Dr. F. S. Smith, of Seattle, and he iu expected to ar rive this evening. Holcomb, the well-known Seattle buyer, has a carload of very fine draft horses ready for shipment. The horses were secured in this section and are a very choice lot. The question of granting James Shipp, of Ukiah, a license to sell liquor, and also of the division of district 27, are still under considera tion by the county court, C, H, Boerstler has bought of Jas per Matheny the northeast quarter of the northwest quarter of section 26, town 6, range 35, lying two miles northwest of Milton, for $5,300. G .E. Stocker, administrator of the estate of Jennie Stocker, has sold to D. Kemmler for $2,500, lots 1, 2, and 3, in block 4, in Raley's addition. The property lies on the north side, at tho corner of Jackson and Bush streets. C. R. Dutton will not run the Tcel Springs resort, contrary to the gen eral impression. Mr. Charters will put the billiard tables of the Com mercial Association In perfect shape for playing. It Is expected that Mr. Charters, who has held the Pacific Northwest championship for amateur billiard playing, will play a match game with W. B. Jenkins, the librari an of the Commercial Association, who is also an expert with a cue. The games to bo played this evening nt tho club rooms will no doubt attract considerable attention among the' lo cal talent. PURCHASES ALTA HOUSE. F. A. Gordon Will Improve This Well Known Webb Street Property. L. Neff has sold to F. A. Gordon for $6,500, lots 3 and 4, and lots 11, 12, 13 and 14, in block 00, in tho res ervation addition. The new purchaser takes possession March 15. This is the property best known as being the Alta house, on East Webb street. Mr. Gordon will personally oversee the affairs of tho hotel, which will be conducted as heretofore. It is not yet determined positively who will be in Immediate charge of the premises. Mr. Gordon will put considerable Improvements upon the property, which he has purchased, which in cludes a feed stable and considerable vacant ground. The union gospel meeting at the Baptist church drew a large audience last night and every night the meet ings are growing in interest and much good work is being done. Carrollton, Mo., March 6, The an nual contest of the Intercollegiate Oratorical Association of Missouri, which takes place here this evening, has attracted student representatives from all parts of the state.
