Story of the Most Noted Bandits of the Nineteenth Century After the War the Youngers Wished to Stay at Home Old Passions Drove Them to Outlawry. Coleman Younger was born In Jack son county, Jan. 15, 1844. He is there fore 59. years old. His, father was Henry Washington Younger, who moved from Kentucky to Missouri and in 1830 married in this county Miss Beesheeba Frlstoe. They had 14 children eight ot them daughters, snys the Kansas City Star, The father of Cole Younger was n thrifty man and a good citizen, lie was three time elected to the Missouri legislature and was for eight years judge of the Jackson county court. He owned a faim of COO acres In Jackson county and another large farm near Harrlsonvllle, Cass county. He moved to that farm In 1858 and began storl;- ralslng and trading. When the civil war broke out he had, besides these two farms, a livery stable and two stores in Harrlsonvllle, His wealth was estimated then to be $100,000, a very large fortune for a man in those days. His children were well educat ed and well reared. ' The war ruined the Younger family financially and ruined patt ol it Mor ally. The father was a union sympa thizer, but the Kansas Jayhawkers and Red Legs roboed him of all his live stock and finally ussaslnated bim near Independence. He was riding lu a buggy from Independence and when five miles out he was set upon and kill cd and $400 was taken from hi3 body It was this act which drove the lounger brother:: to enlist under the l!ack flarr of Quantrell. Coienmr. Younger joined tnat band Jan. 1 180::. His first fight wafc one nlht v. hen tne tanil was at the homo of Joiip Finn nery near Kansas City. A body of federal soldiers surrounded ttio house and demanded surrender. Quantrell momlsed an answer in ten minutes, This gave him time to arrange his men inside the houne and to pour a mut' derous vollry of buckshot Into the sol diers, The fight lasted two hours Then the federals set the houso afire The guerillas rushed from the burn Iiil' buildine into the faces of tho aoldlors, each firing his gun. All es caped. Cole Younger became separat ed from his comrades and was chased by 12 cavalrymen, whom he fought off single handed. After the fight Cole Younger stopped two days at tho homo of Jerry Ulyttio Iff P nnw n inn a MtntlCI A Mtl 'IMers. Estimates fnrnlshed on short Job Work a specialty. James and others of the Quantrell crowd and formed that band of des perate bandits which spread terror over this part of the West for many years. In just how many bank rob i tries, train robberieb and highway robberies "Cole" Younger took pan will never be known, but his name has hppn ronnected with many of uiem He was the coolest and shrewdest of all that outlaw band. In all the wanderings of the Younger brothers In the 10 years between tho close of the war and the bank lobbcry at Northfield, Minn., which proved their undoing, the old home and haunts in Jackson county hold strong attrac tions for them, and often they return nil here. The curse of the outlaw and tlin wondered was UDOll them, but through all this country they bad many friends who would rather die than ue Irav them. The love of home was as stronc within them as the same in stinct in the breast ol tne noming pigeon and 25 years lmpi'liunmoni i.ever deadened it. It was the middle of August, 187C, that "Cole" Younger and his two Lrotbers rode out liom Lee's summit to join Frank and Jesse James and Ihe others for the jong ride lo North field. This was "Cole" Younger's InBt expedition. "Jim" and "I3ob" never saw theolJ home again. "Hob" died in prison. "Jim" killed himself last summer. Both are burled In the graveyard near Lee's Summit. Younger will be the only one tilo to look upon the scenes youth. In September of 18CC, 18 months after the close of tho war, all the Younger boys weie back upon the old homestead near Harrlsonvllle mend ing fences, putting up barns and get ting ready for farming.
